A Singer's Quest....

Hey everyone!

I am new to the site so this is my first entry. I came home from vacation and decided to get back into shape. I always get distracted and somehow fall off of track of losing weight. I am hoping this time, like all times, will be different. The problem is finding foods that are healthy and tasty. I live at home with my parents and I can't afford my own groceries right now. So I pretty much eat what they have. I love fruits, vegetables and lean meats, but it is all about finding the foods to make a meal.

I am also bad at eating breakfast. Today I woke up and had coffee. A few hours later I have a peach and some watermelon cubes.

For lunch I had a turkey sandwich and this grrek dip with pita. Do any of you have advice on how to not get off track and tips on will power?

I have been wishing on my birthday cake every year to lose weight and well my birthday just passed. So maybe this is the year my wish will come true. HEHE

THANKS!!!!!

I am new as well! This time will be different! You just have to think of it as a lifestyle change, not a diet. Diets are temporary... you want this to be permanent!!

As far as breakfast, it is a struggle. I eat a bowl of fruit every morning while I am getting ready for the day. You said your parents keep fruit around, so maybe this would be an option? I also like to do protein shakes. I use the go lean brand because it has fiber in it (sticks with me longer). I always remember to eat something in the morning (if I am hungry or not) so that I can take my multi-vitamin... I will forget if I wait until later in the day.

Good luck and remember to exercise!

Welcome dreamerangela it's great to see that you have made the decision to live a healther life. Diet is only half the battle when it comes to weight loss don't forget about exercise as well. I've found that by updating my Diary regularly I get all the motivation and support I need.

"For lunch I had a turkey sandwich and this grrek dip with pita. Do any of you have advice on how to not get off track and tips on will power?"

Once you cross the two week hurdle of your new diet and exercise it pretty much becomes a habit.

You just have to keep your eyes on the prize Angela.

Went over

Well....today was the first day of eating better and less. I used fitday.com like suggested. I didn't realize how many calories are used up by items you wouldnt think would make a difference. I went over my maxiumum 2000 calories by 400 CALS. I ate lots of fruit, vegetables, but I think I had to many carbohydrates. Anyone have suggestions for replacing the carbs. It seems like every meal needs a carb. For example, bread, pasta, etc. How do most of you replace items like these that go with meals?

I don't eat much bread, sometimes I have a craving and I will have one piece. I also replaced almost all the pasta I would have eaten previously with brown rice. If you get a rice maker it makes things easier. I eat brown rice with at least one meal almost every day.

Also you could try getting those pre-cooked healthy butterball chicken meals.

There's about two servings worth in a package and they are good for a week or two.

You could have something like that for dinner without any bread products at all.

So this morning I started off with an apple, banana and coffee. All the cereal in the house is too sugary. Any suggestions for carbs?

Also, I just turned 21 and there will be times that I go out. Do any of you ave suggestions for the lo-cal alcoholic drinks?

Moderation with alcohol will be your best bet... Most alcohol is around the same number of calories, it's the mixers that really pack in the extra calories...

find yourself a high fiber cereal - one that doesn't contain High Fructose Corn Syrup... that'll give you some good carbs for the day and give you a big shot of fiber as well - there are tons of other sources of good carbs in the form of various grains - like bulgur, quinoa, even brown rice...

Thank you. I estimated my weight for my tracker and I weighed myself today. First time in months and I am two pounds over what I estimated and hope I wasn't. I really really would like to lose weight. I just want to gain back my crazy energy and feel confident in the way I look. I don't right now. I hate how it takes so long to lose it, but it is more of a life change. I just can't see myself never eating things like pizza or cake again. Do you guys eat these things still, but in moderation?

pizza - hamburgers -potato chips - cake I never really liked - but yeah - everything is still on my list -the only banned things for me are HFCS and transfats other than that _ i will make anything i want fit into my day - and just keep track of my calories

Hi and welcome! I agree with mal. Total caloric intake is what really counts. it's basically math. in order to lose weight, you have to burn, on a whole, more calories than you take in. Now there are "good" and "bad" calories and types of fat and whatnot, but again, it's basic math. Burn more than you take in, and there will be less in your body afterwards. :D

Good luck on your journey! I plan on watching!

p.s. Why is you're diary titles "Singer's Quest"? Do you sing? Cause I do, and I wanted to know if you do and what types of things you sing!

Xorie: Question: I have been eating horrible for a while now. Only once or twice a day and by the time I ate I would be so hungry I would eat anything. Well i lose weight now if I eat more, but less? Because if I eat more I might take in more calories then I did before. Im confused.

Yes I am a country singer. I have a band and I just got back from Miami where I tried out for American Idol. I made it through one round, but then they gave me a list of songs that they wanted me to choose a song from within one day. Well, I didnt like any of their selections. I had fun, but their main goal is PLUBLICITY. After all, a pimp made it through. hehe

Ok, sorry if I confused you.

Lets say you take in 1500 cals in one day. If you burn 2000 cals that same day, you are burning 500 more than what you took in, and you're burning off more energy than you took in, so your body takes that energy from the fat stores in you body, therefore making you start your weightloss.

I hoped that helped! sorry again if I confused you!

And yay for the country singing! Most of the people my age (18) like the rap crap. I sing country, classical, and broadway. I've been told to try out for AI, but I really don't like the show. It's basically if you're pretty, and have a good voice you get popular just because you're on TV.

Definatly try to eat multiple small meals a day rather than eating a lot at one sitting. If you carry healthy snacks with you it makes this easier. I like to bring cut up veggies, low fat yogert and V8 with me so I have choices when I feel hungry.

Is V8 healthy? I love it!

What kind of snacks do you guys eat? I love yogurt and vegetables. I have a dipping problem though. Everything I eat needs a condiment. I am trying to work on this. I did pretty good today.

V8 is high in sodium, which can lead to water retention, and it's not calorie free so don't use it as asubstitute for water, but for an occassional treat it's fine -just make sure you do get plenty of vegetables though - more vitamins and fiber are in real veggies.

Theres nothing wrong wtih dipping -just count those calories - hummus is a good high fiber dip that will help keep you full - and salsa is another low calorie dipping alternative.

I go with the low sodium V8 in the single serving cans (it is 30 cal). Also, with yogert watch the sugar level. Some yogert is loaded with sugar.

I like chopped veggies for snack or V8. I also have a protein shake everyday... I use the Go Lean mix because it has fiber in it.
