A protein question. . .

I've read on several websites that your body can only digest 30-40 grams of protein at once. If this is true, then how would someone who weights 250LBS consume up to 250-500 grams of protein? I mean, 350-500 grams of protein divided by 6 smaller meals is 45-85 grams of protein per meal, meaning that the person is eating more than they can digest.

And if this is true, then why do so many mass gaining supplements put up to 60 grams of protein in a single serving?

What happens to the excess protein?

Excess protein is broken down and used as fuel. And alot of people eat too much protein in their diet, its a common problem. They think that more is better, while its really not. I remember reading the 30-40 grams of protein at once, but its a long time ago, so i dont know if its valid anymore. Hopefuly someone who knows a bit more about it will chime inn.

And BTW: I dont know where you got the example of 250-500 grams of protein, but it you read some huge bodybuilders did it then im pretty sure they can use more if they are using.

If you go to

Some of the bodybuilding websites, they tell you that you should eat 1-2 grams of protein for every pound you weigh. But then again, there are some websites that tell you that you only need .7 grams per pound. I guess it depends on who you ask.

Too much protein can harm your kidneys. That's all I know

And has been shown to cause calcium excretion rather then retention!
^this is up to a LOT of debate right now for whether or not this is true.

aswell as to much of a specic amino acid (Hey) which if (Folate,B6, and B12 arnt in place to metabolize homocysteine can lead to something called HyperHomocysteinemia
Which is basically an elevated level of Homocysteine in the blood stream which causes Tears and inflammation throughout your arterial system.
Next time your at the "Docs" have him check your homocysteine level. Some reports even show that it increases a persons chance for "atherosclerosis"
If its high one should quickly supplement with (at the very least folate) but all three would be best (a typical "quality" Bmulti can help here) To bring that level down.

There really is quite a large amount of debate of what amount can lead to increased kidney stress. Most docs believe it to be about a 130-150grams regardless of body weight. Most Rd's believe it to be above 1.2-1.5 times bodyweight
Famous body builders such as Arnold and "the original HULK" claim to have took in levels of about 1gram per KG

Without much data on the subject all we can do is speculate and guess for the most part.

My personal belief is many people are taking in to much protein(especially inactive people). I personally would not exceed the 1.2 grams per pound.

Yeah, I forgot that part on the debate. Also I heard about heart attacks? Something like that, but I am sure you probably know something about that.

No, never heard of it increasing chances for heart attacks. But i guess it makes sense because of the arterial damage.

Meh, you shouldn't really worry about consuming too much protein if you don't even know where you are currently at though - it would take a bit more than that.
