A New Beginning ;)

Hi all. Right, getting down to business.

I've been going to a gym now for 1 year and 1 month, and I've noticed a difference in fitness, but there has been little to none in weight difference. In fact, I've put ON weight. I was 83 kg when I started, and now I am 93. As you can see, for a 16 year old, this is definitely not healthy. I'm 179 cm tall, but still, my BMI is 28 or 29, and this is right next to obesity range.

I guess what I'm asking is, how can I overcome the laziness, and the hate of exhaustion (because I hate feeling tired for some reason), and how can I lose about 10 kg in 8 weeks? I really, really want to make a difference NOW, and I can't seem to do it alone.

Problems that are in my way are :

I don't live alone, so I can't decide what is cooked for meals etc.

Although I've resisted things more than I used to, I still crave the odd Tim Tam etc, and I know I can stop this. I'm trying to convince parents not to buy high calorie foods, but to no avail, they just say 'stop eating them'.

So, I have ideas of how I can improve, etc. staying for longer at the gym (if I can decrease boredom in some way) and possibly needing to make my own meals.

Thanks in advance,
kingofqueens ;)

KQ, remember that muscle weighs more than fat! It IS possible to gain weight by muscle alone. That said, you need to find what "drives" you. Why do you want to lose weight? Have you set any goals either for fitness or weight? Are you eating enough of the RIGHT foods to sustain the workouts you do ( poss. reasons for being too tired all the time)? Are you drinking your water? Have you started a journal? That is the best way to get ideas and support. IF you need to beat a craving, drink water, come here to post and read diaries or PM me or someone else.

Hope this helps! :D

Thanks BizeB. In regards to your 'goals' question, I have set one or two:

1) To lose 10 Kg or more in 8 weeks and up

2) To attend the gym 5 days a week

I want to lose weight, because like everyone I guess, it's partly an image thing. But I guess the main reason is to make my lifestyle better, easier, as it's not fun to be slower than everyone else, or being picked last for a team, or not being able to participate in certain activities.
My fitness is actually at a good level to 'gain' weight loss, mainly because I've been at the gym for a while, but quite a bit of improvement is still needed, I think

I've started my second goal, and I'm well on my way with it, but sometimes it's difficult to get motivated.

Also, to the 'cravings', I didn't make that as clear as I could have. In fact, it may be the wrong word. What my problem is, is that once I eat something tasty, I'll want more. So that's where my problem lies.

um..we also eat a lot of good foods. Wholemeal breads, salads, vegetables, non-fat meat (e.g. no sausages etc.) However, as usual in a lot of cases, chocolate, chips etc. will get in the way, and I'll put on the weight. This actually annoys me the most, I'll eat one chocolate, and someone else who eats 4 will stay skinny....:(

Anyway, any help is appreciated :) Thanks again

Several questions we need to ask first.

How do you work out?
What do you eat?
What are you eating habits like.

The way how you eat, when you eat and how to exercise will make a huge difference. You need a plan first

Yep, the big question is food. For me, i also don't live alone, so i dont have a say in what i eat, but, i do have a choice in the amounts i eat. for instance, if rice, meat, veggies are being served..i have less rice, but i eat a lot of meat and veggies, since i need the protein from the meat. but i dont want too many carbs. When your mom goes grocery shopping, go with her, and choose healthy foods for you to snack on. such as whole wheat bread n low fat ham to go with it. or, healthy popcorn, water based tuna, some veggies u like to eat like carrots or celery. cut them up n leave them in the fridge in little zip lock bags so when u r hungry u can just grab the carrots without having to wash n skin the carrots n cut them. In my opinion, its the snack and fridgerator/cabinet trips that actually decide whether you're going to lose or gain weight. Remember, you always have the choice and power to choose what to eat, and how much to eat.

also, try www.fitday.com to make sure you are meeting your required calorie intake.

Hey, kingofqueens. You sound like a pretty normal person. I have the same problems, once I start eating something I like, I have a hard time stopping. It's not easy but then anything worth doing never is.

For one thing, yes, the stock answer is muscle weighs more than fat. You haven't said what you do at the gym but if you're like most guys you do a lot of weight training and not enough cardio. It seems like our testosterone won't let us get on the treadmill or elliptical trainer. What you need to do is lighten up the weights, do more reps with less weight and increase your cardio.

I don't believe in denial of what we like. I've done the low-carb diets, the low-fat diets and everything in between. It's moderation and portion control that work. Yes, a healthy diet is very important but you can't avoid everything you like or you will just binge when you do eat it. The key is to burn more than you take in. You're lack of energy could be not eating enough or it could be your body adjusting. Find a cardio exercise you enjoy, running, cycling, hiking, whatever. Do it 3 - 5 times a week and keep in increasing the time and/or intensity (preferrably both) as you adjust to it. Try to work to an increase of around 10% every 5 - 6 sessions. Again, healthy food is important, but the key to weight loss is burning more calories that you consume.

Drink tons of water. Most of us go through life dehydrated. We think that because we are consuming liquids, regardless of the fact that it's juice or diet soda, that we're doing well. That won't do it. Water, water, water. You'll be amazed at how much better you feel.
