A Marketers View On Obesity

I came across this article while working and thought some of you might like a read. It's a view of the health food market and obesity problem from the view point of the brand owners and marketing agencies.

FYI, Tesco are the dominant supermarket chain in the UK taking 1 in every 8 £'s spent in Britain, just in case you're American and wondering who they were

I read the report. But, I am still curious why a grocer would promote lower margin products(whole foods) rather than higher margin products(prepared foods)?

I imagine it's due to the socio-economic groups who purchase those products. It touched on it in the report but those people who purchase 'whole foods' and fruit and veg are generally wealhtier people and they will spend a lot more in store and purchase premium priced products like expensive wines. The people who buy prepared food have lower incomes and don't but the luxury items they haven't budgeted for

Si, claro! There are many "fresh", "whole", "organic" grocery outlets in US catering to those with solid discretionary income. My friends who shop there buy a dinner party's worth of food at the specialty shop, but, go to mainstream grocer for every day items.

New to this forum, one of my passions is education. Glad to have this forum to assist all who are interested in learning. Challenge seems to be in education masses, especially primary school and high school, on health choices.

Thanks for the post, CCR!

Interesting read, I have read similar articles that say basically the same thing. I find it interesting that supermarkets do things like put more expensive items at eye level and put produce at the front door so people can justify buying bad stuff because they already have some fruit and veg in the trolley.
