A gym newbie

I am both incredibly excited and VERY nervous! I just purchased a 2-year membership at a new gym that will be opening up in a few weeks. I have never had a gym membership before.

I really want to avoid doing something wrong or getting in someone else's way in the gym. I am also nervous because people in the gym look so good and I...um....don't. :p

I'd love any tips or information you can give me!

Hi, My tip; Don't worry about the others in the gym. Your there to get fit and in shape. There should be instructors there to teach you how to use the machines.

yeah, the people that you say look so good, they started somewhere right? Even if they were not overweight, they were not as tone, not as fit, not as (insert adjective here)... next time you go, look around, you will be suprised that not everyone is as good as you think (I'm at the gym for example :) haha)....

It took me a while to get the courtesy down at the gym, but don't worry, most people are polite and will help you. Please don't be put off by the people that are a-holes. I live in southern california, where the mentality is "my schedule is more important than yours", and I just learned to ignore those people. No matter what, KEEP GOING!.. I really do love the gym, and you'll find the endorphins from working out are a nice perk!

Good luck

Good luck! You can do it. :) I just started going to the gym (and eating properly!) in earnest last September and I've already lost 22 lbs and get myself into the gym at least 3 times a week. It's all about how seriously you really want to acheive your goals.

Hey bep! Let's see...I would suggest taking music and magazines with you if you're doing cardio or you can listen to music and watch t.v. It helps the time go by faster! Try to clean up your sweat after using each equipment and don't linger around machines if you're not using them...common courtesy. I generally don't talk on my phone while in the fitness center. I would recommend doing cardio and weights and stretching of course if you can. Take sandals for the shower (don't know what kind of germs linger in there! ha ha)! Other than that, you should be fine! Start slowly of course so you don't injure yourself and go from there. Don't be afraid to ask for help when needed!! Don't be intimidated by so and so's toned body or so and so's beauty/handsomeness. After all, you're there giving effort and people will admire you for that! Focus on being the best you can be and please don't give up (most people give up after not seeing results...it takes time!!!!)!!!! Best of luck!! =)

Thank you for the replies! I am really excited to start at the gym. It is new and won't be open until the first of the year or so....it's hard to wait. I'm nervous about doing something 'wrong' on the machines since I'm not going to be familiar with most of them....but I am really looking forward to learning how to use them.

You will very likely be asked to complete an induction with a trained professional in the gym before you are allowed to use the equipment, so don't be too afraid that you won't know what to do as they will explain and demonstrate what all of the equipment they have to offer does and how to use it.

Good luck, I hope your membership pays off for you.

There is one thing I am very curious about. This is a brand new gym opening around the first of the year so they have been doing WONDERFUL deals on memberships so they can have people in there when they open. So....does this mean I am going to spend a lot of time waiting for machines I want to use? As is, I am already going to be nervous since it's all new....I am a bit timid with people I don't know in scenerios I'm not comfortable in, so am I going to struggle to get machines? :Z

Hi Bep.

I don't know where in the US you live, but in southern california the gyms are CRAZY crowded. Add to the fact that property is very expensive, so gyms cram things really close together to use the small spaces they have. That being said, I still typically don't have to wait more then a few minutes for the machines during "rush hour" (am or pm)... it's pretty good. If for some reason they screw you guys at that gym, and oversell the membership, you can talk to the club manager and tell them they are not provided the service you were promised when you entered your contract, and would like a full refund. I have used that line several times in my life (not abused that line, but used it when companies were treating their customers like crap. You can then shop around for another gym. Here we have 24-hour fitness, LA fitness, Bally total fitness, Gold's gym, etc. I am sure you have some options.

Let us know how it goes for you!!
