A couple of questions that someone could maybe help me with

Hi everyone.
This is my first post so il start by giving you a bit of my background.......
Im 28 now and its got to the point in my life where im fed up with doing nothing so ive decided to get in shape!
I use to do alot of exercise including running tennis football and the gym.
These days i work and have my son alot so dont really get time to warrant joining a gym.
Im 6ft 2 and currently weigh 12.6 stone so im by no means overweight infact ive never been over this weight before .
Ive started a mini workout at home that so far includes this.......
45mins on a crosstrainer once a day
50 situps once a day
20 pushups once a day
Spin class once per week
1 hour swim once per week

Im hoping that this is a good start and im really feeling better in myself about it but i would like to do more.
So my question is this......

If i were to do 40 situps twice or three times a day would it make a big difference in a short amount of time?
What other things could i do around the house to really help?
Im a trained chef so have a good understanding of food but would like a decent diet to go on for now.
Basically i want to get fit and look fit rather than have a flat belly and no muscle .

Any info and tips would be of great help.
Sorry for the long post.

Cheers

Sham

As a start to get you used to training this is fine. I would say something that's getting you into training, feels good and enjoyable is a great start.
There is one major but here. You workout is uneven, not an issue in the short term, especially not at beginners intensity, but after 8 weeks or so of this you will want a program that involves using the whole body in similar intensities.
In general, keep at it for now, you're enjoying it and safe for now. The advantage of changing in a few weeks is you get time to decide what you enjoy most.
There is some great generic training guidance in the weight training from Goldfish, or if as you say the gym is not for you, have a look at bodyweight threads.
I know you have said you want to be and look fit but it would be good to know what you mean by that. If you consider this obvious have a look at goldfish's post on myth busting the fitness files in articles and research, it shows how fit can look a variety of ways.

Hi Sham, this is my first post too :) I have a collection of fitness websites and blogs, may be help and motivate you :)
