6 meals a day...

So im new to this forum but ive been reading some of the threads, and i find that alot of people encourage 6 smaller meals a day to keep your body burning calories, energy etc..

BUT.

i was watching tv about two weeks ago, im pretty sure it was the news or something, and it was saying how skipping meals isnt all that bad for you. they said something like this:

one day, eat untill your satisfyed at each meal, the next day, fast ( dont eat )

they did a study and it showed that you dont gain weight from skipping meals like some other people have tried to convince....

i dont actually know because im not a heath nutritionist but i just found it kind of interesting and i wanted to know what everyone thought about this!

Thanks everyone! by the way my names belinda and i hope this forum helps me out because im currently trying to lose some weight and tone up :)

hello belinda :)

who was the study done on and who did the study? who they did it on and what they were trying to determine can show the real purpose of the findings. personally i hear too much of the following:

Q. Is skipping meals good for weight loss?

No. Skipping meals does not help weight loss or dieting!

Skipping meals leads to low blood sugar. This can cause sudden hunger pangs which can cause bingeing and/or food cravings. Either way, it's bad for weight loss.

For example, diet-research indicates that people who skip breakfast are more likely to be overweight than those who eat a proper breakfast.

A good way of dieting, is to eat 4-5 smaller meals rather than 2 or 3 big ones. Why? It helps stabilize blood sugar and helps control your appetite.

and another

Myth: Skipping meals is a good way to lose weight.

Fact: Your body needs a certain amount of calories and nutrients each day in order to work properly. If you skip meals during the day, you will be more likely to make up for those missing calories by snacking or eating more at the next meal. Studies show that people who skip breakfast tend to be heavier than those who eat a nutritious breakfast. A healthier way to lose weight is to eat many small meals throughout the day that include a variety of nutritious, low-fat, and low-calorie foods.

and this

Avoid skipping meals. Eating increases your matabolism, thus skipping meals can 'trick' your body into slowing down its metabolism in an attempt to conserve calories during a period it perceives as a situation where limited fuel is available.

plus my personal experience and many, many others repeatedly agree with the above. i'd have to see more to convince me otherwise.

:)

abear is right. skipping meals also tells your body that it is starving and tries to make your metabolism go down. eating 4 to 6 times a day in smaller portions is logical since

a) it makes your body "think" that it is not starving
b) it gives your body time to "melt" (metabolize) carbs instead turning it to fat (rate of absorption) <-- this is why complex carbohydrates are better than simple carbohydrates. complex carbohydrates takes time to digest and absorb
c) you feel more satiated

trust me... i asked that question to a nutritionist ^_^ good luck!

ok thanks thats great help!

but one more question, if your eating 6 meals a day, what type of meals are these, i mean, would one meal be like, an apple? it just seems like a lot.....

each meal should be based off protein then add carbs and fats are one or the other. i consider a meal something like a chicken breast and a sweet potato or some salmon and brown rice or oatmeal and eggs, etc

just simple meals :)

abear is right. protein based meals are good. not only does protein NOT become fat when not metabolized but it is also a necessary thing when building muscles. i dont eat meat that much anymore because im a little edgy about it but I still drink protein supplements and eat hard boiled eggs (i eat only the egg whites) more than carbohydrates.
