45 at 45: Getting older, wiser, and smarter

I have been here a couple of days already, but just starting my diary here. Looks like I'm fairly "old" compared to most of the folks here! I'm all of 45 (why does it not feel like it should be so old?!).

I have about 40-45 lbs to lose. Have lost a couple already, probably just water from not eating salty & sweet stuff. Will only be doing "official" weighing once a week, or I will go crazy. I can gain and lose 5 lbs in a single day just from water.

Biggest battle will be accepting that I can never eat sugar again; and probably not any refined carbs either. My body just cannot deal with them.

That's ok, so far. I think.

The plan:
  • Food: 3 small meals and 2 snacks per day, high on the protein if possible, low on carbs. Not Atkins or anything; just trying to avoid insulin crashes and rebounds.
  • Exercise: Walking on the treadmill at least 4 to 6 days a week for minimum 30 minutes each time.
  • Motivation: Use of some motivational/hpnosis CD's I have that have worked well in the past as long as I actually made time to listen to them. Tracking everything in FitDay.com. Posting at least once daily here. And finally, putting a little money aside for every pound I lose, so that THIS time I really will be able to afford some new clothes that fit when I reach goal!

Age is a state of mind.

until you exercise, then it's a state of more Bengay ®

(pssst, I'm older than you) :D

hey if i could, I'd make a suit out of those ben gay patches - those things are proof of the existance of a higher power... :D

Thanks maleficient and T2_Trucker! Boy ain't that the truth about bengay. Good stuff, that. Wish it wasn't so stinky though. Can't go out in public with it on, not without clearing a room!

Hey There :)
Welcome to your diary and congratulations to you for taking these first steps - they really are the hardest.

And um...you're not alone in the 40's department around here ;)

I am definitely going to look for ActivOn, especially if it helps joints too. Never seen it around here, but if it's not local, I'm sure I can find it online.

M2M, I honestly thought you were about 25 years old! wow. You are a true role model.

Cool, I don't feel so out of place now. Thanks all for making me feel so welcome!! :)

Time to get back to work, though. I am waaaay behind!

I think I found it at Walmart. It's in a tube-stick like thing. Made by the same people who do those stupid HeadOn commercials where it just repeats itself over and over and over and...

The nice thing about it is that since it's in a plastic tube (kinda like a giant chapstick), you never get it on your hands, so there's no forgetting and accidentally getting it in your eye. Been there, done that, with IcyHot and Tiger Balm both. Ooowww.

I'm not in my 40's yet (pushing 30 really hard, tho!), but I can definately feel you on the aches and pains:rolleyes:

Hey there! I'll just blather at you here, instead of in your Newcomers thread :D
Glad to see you making a diary; it's really helping me. I'm sure that dumping all of my insecurities and attitude out for everyone else is causing no END of troubles for them, but I feel better, dangit ;)
See ya 'round!

From your Newcomer's thread:
I'm going to go make some strong Earl Grey. Can't drink coffee or eat espresso beans any more, but hot beverages sometimes help kill my cravings a little. Maybe it's just the burned tastebuds......

I am supposed to be catching up on work though or I will never be able to come up for air tonight. With luck, I can dig in with my {mmmummbblegrump}..teacup and forget about food for awhile.

Gum, sugarfree gum. I am eating a ton of it right now, and smoking a lot more than normal, too. I'm up over a pack a week, but it seems to be giving me that "reset" I need on my food cravings.

I hate this, and you know, I am the BEST diet cheater that ever existed/ "Oh? I didn't have any IDEA that cheese-filled footlong sausages could even HAVE a hundred grams of fat in them! That is ah-MAY-zing! Well, I'll know for next time. Mmm.. my favorite part is the cheese left on the paper, you know?"

Grrr... I'm glad I can make other people suffer as well; your anuish at my use of the FF words made me feel better. Guess it's just my inner sadist peeking out, I'll try to do better in the future. I was almost ready to go get some of those greasy bastards, just to free the world of their presence.

I really like the fact that you are putting money away for your clothes; it speaks of seriousness, and might make a big difference down the line. Keep your fingers crossed, and feel free to say bad things about me, they're probably true anyhow ;)

Used to chew gum on diets, but found that the whole chewing thing would actually make me want to eat real food instead. So when quitting smoking, I chewed on Jelly Belly jellybeans and crunched my way through about 10 lbs of hard candies. (Hey Dr. Mandible, whaddaya mean I have ELEVEN cracked teeth ?! No joke.) Seriously, I have a dental appointment later today to fix the first cracked tooth. Yuck and ow.

The good news is I sneaked an unofficial peak at the scales this morning. Have lost 7 lbs. Obviously most of that is water, because I have not had sugar or salt in 4 days, and both make me retain water. Since the number on the scales is subject to wild fluctation, I still will only update the ticker once a week though.

Cravings are pretty awful again today. I think sleep deprivation has something to do with food cravings. Was awake until 3 a.m. just to get the high-priority work done, and up again at 6 a.m. to drive my teens to school. That's the second 3-hour night in a week, and the third in 2 weeks.

Stayed on track for breakfast (steamed halibut with carrots - yes, it's a weird breakfast, but we've got a ton of fish in the freezers, and it's a great diet food). On my 5th cup of tea so far today. Will switch to water this evening but I will definitely need more caffeine to function today.

I won't have time to post much more today if at all, since I will be losing a couple of hours at the dentist. :( I still have a lot more work to do, and I cannot tolerate many more 3-hour nights!

Hang tight, don't you dare give up, and I will "see" ya tomorrow!

Cheers! :D

Hmm, that stinks about the gum. I like your idea of breakfast, though: Fish is good food. I dunno so much about steamed, but I can see where it would be tasty. The candy thing stinks, but the evil Dr. Mandible will make sure that thos horrid teeth of yours are "taken care of"... for good. ;)
Well, hopefully. :D

What an afternoon! Two hours in the chair, every bit as bad as I feared. Nurse suggested pain meds for the first few days, but I'm sticking with plain old Tylenol. Last thing I need is to get addicted to something else.

Had an ice-cold chocolate protein shake (with 1/2 oz real cacao nibs, no sugar) for dinner at 8 p.m., after my mouth finally quit flopping around like Cosby's dentist routine.

The bright side: I don't want to eat anything!

Man, Tylenol doesn't do anything for me, I'm almost jealous. On the other hand, neither does Vicodin, no buzz, no pain relief, nothin'... Unless I drink a bunch with it. :D
I'm a firm fan of Aspirin and Ibuprofen products.

Aspirin's ok in small amounts; I puke on ibuprofen; and I have never tried Vicodin. Narcotics of any kind scare the hell out of me.

Day 5. Still sticking with the diet, still staying sugarless and eating no refined carbs. It's getting easier, finally. For now anyway. I think this is where the roller-coaster begins, where I have to guard against being overconfident, else I will be completely undone by some sudden craving that I rationalize my way around. Doing OK for now though. Still doing 1 30-minute diet hypnosis/motivational CD per day, which helps too. So does posting here every day, and reading other people's stories on these boards.

One day at a time, this time.

Worked sort of late last night again, until about 1 a.m. When I finally quit to wind down before bed, I was starving but settled for a little tin of sardines in soybean oil. Don't say eeewww :p . I actually like 'em, and they are so nutritious I can feel obnoxiously virtuous when I eat them. They were a also perfect choice last night, since they're soft & squishy & don't require much chewing! I drained and rinsed the oil out, then SALTED them... who can eat sardines without salt?? I will probably regret that salt on Sunday when I weigh again, unless I can flush it all out with a ton of water between now and then.

Back to work, back to work.

And they ARE tasty!
Well, I don't salt them, but the ones I get are already very salty; you could do worse ;)
the water will do you plenty of good, and besides, who cares if it shows up this week, it'll just look even better next week, if you do retain some water. Next week, you'll lose that water weight, as well. See? Always a silver lining (or some crap like that :p ).
Do you eat Tuna or canned salmon? I practically LIVE on canned salmon, packed in water; it is at LEAST one meal a day. I love Costco... :D
