4 Months to a (Somewhat) New Me

Hi everyone!

My name is Jessica. I'm 22 years old, currently a uni student, living in the US but wishing I were in Canada.

I joined this website on recommendation from a friend who said that it was a great community and that I should try doing a diary thing to keep track on my weight loss progress. So that's what I'm doing! For the next 4 months, I'm going on a bit of a self-improvement kick, before my marriage and graduation late this December.

My whole life I was quite thin, but the past few years, I've gained A LOT of weight, around 50 pounds, a lot due unfortunately to stress ice cream binges. I lost a bit from my highest weight a while ago, but due to the stress of writing my graduation thesis (I do biochemistry research) and spending the summer living with my fiance (who is an AMAZING cook and loves to feed me lots, lol), I've gained a bit back, I guessing to about 25 pounds more than I'd like to be. Worse than that is that I haven't been exercising regularly, so I've lost some muscle tone. Before, even when I was at a higher weight, I was still exercising nearly every day, but lately I've slacked off and REALLY begun to notice it in my arms and legs.

The reasons that I want to lose weight are a few. One, I just want to feel healthier again like I used to. I don't need to lose all the weight I've gained, but at least get closer to the weight and size I was a few years ago. Two, I'm getting married in December, doing the final dress fitting exactly 3 months from yesterday, and like nearly everyone I'm sure, I'd like to look as good as possible. The other thing is, since I'm both graduating and getting married and moving to another country to where my fiance is, I'm sort of starting a new life, and that's kind of a good time to lose weight and start off on a good foot, right?

So, since my focus is on overall self-improvement, not just weight, I've got a few goals to try to stick to:

-every day, do stretching exercises

-drink more water and tea

-eat mostly "clean" not very processed kinds of foods, lots of fresh vegetables and such, and stick to around 500 calories per meal (as I'm prone to skipping meals and then just eating way too much at dinner)

-do some kind of skin treatment for my face once a week

-exercise most days of the week, both cardio and strength training

-work on repairing my damaged hair, from constantly playing with it and knotting it as a nervous habit, by using good shampoo and conditioner and not touching it

I don't know how much I weigh now, and I don't plan on keeping track (I'm guessing around 140, at 5'6"), because from experience I know that I can get way way too obsessed with scale numbers and do stupid things like not drink water just to see something lower. So I'm going to keep track with pictures instead! I plan on taking one every Tuesday morning, same time same place. I'll find a place to store photo albums to put the pictures up to share with everyone who might care to see soon.

I hope to write something on here close to every day as I remember, to track how I'm doing on my goals there. That was kind of a long intro so I don't know if anyone is reading, but thanks to anyone who does want to watch my progress, and I hope to make some friends here. :)

Hey Jessica!! Im around the same age as you (im 21) and i loved your diary entry. You are getting married in december HOW EXCITING!! I always wanted to get married. Oh hun you are going to have such a fab day and i know you will look GORGEOUS. Anyways good luck on your weight loss journey and my only advice to you is to keep a food diary and write in this diary everyday!! If you do these two things you will have no trouble shifting the unwanted pounds!!

Cant wait to hear your progress!! All the best chick xoxox

Thanks Sunflower and Irishprincess for your replies!! I really am liking this website....seems so supportive and friendly! :)

I wasn't even sure if I was going to go all strict on "the plan" this week as I'm still sorting out schedules, and I'm the kind of person that likes to plan out very well in advance what I'm doing, rather than just doing whatever but not on like specific times or whatever. But anyway I've done good I think.

Breakfast is hard for me, because all I really want to do is drink coffee, so I've been giving myself protein shakes that I make myself with whey protein and some fruit usually, or with coffee if I use the choco flavored kind. Keeping it close to 400 calories. It sounds like wayyyy too much, but after some things I read on here, I realized that probably when I've tried dieting before, I've been not having ENOUGH calories and that may have contributed to my non-success. So doing that.

For lunch, two days ago I had a tuna sandwich (mixed in mustard, onions, and nori) and then yesterday I made something called "super miso soup" which my fiance and I sort of invented, which basically involves making miso soup into the main dish, putting in whatever you have, lol, and mine was some assorted vegetables like broccoli, zucchini, yellow squash, and carrots plus a chicken breast. Both days, chose ingredients to make as close to 500 calories as possible!

Then for dinner, two days ago it was tilapia with miso on it, just cooked in a pan with a small bit of oil, miso spread on top (can you tell I like miso?) plus a salad with vinegar dressing (300-400 calories) and yesterday, actually I still was not feeling very hungry, so I just steamed some broccoli and had some sliced turkey breast (like 250-300 calories).

I'm not a very great or adventurous cook when I'm by myself, so I'm afraid my food listings will get boring very quickly!! Basically I eat a lot of the simple, Japanese-inspired dishes....Japanese/Jessica fusion cuisine. I love eating more complicated dishes, but for myself, I just cannot be bothered to spend too much time cooking. And honestly, until I met my boyfriend, who as I said is passionate about cooking, I was quite satisfied to eat very very simple, salt-flavored, no-cooking-required-except-maybe-a-microwave everything. Now I'm trying to mix it up a bit, but still staying true to my like of simpler flavors and not spending too much time on it.

Also, I went to the gym on Wednesday and Friday, did 30 minutes of the elliptical kind of machine plus upper body strength training. My legs have always been naturally very muscular, so I feel like doing kind of intense cardio is enough that I don't need to do strength training on them....but what do you guys think?

Today is Saturday. I stayed up awfully late watching movies with K (as I shall refer to the fiance) over the internet. For the past month while I was with him, we were watching the TV series called "24" like so much....sometimes 3-4 episodes/hours of it a day! We went through the first three and a half seasons, lol, now finishing up the fourth. Goodness, I miss him, but it was good to finally spend a lot of time together, talked for like 3 or 4 hours...since I've been back, we've both been busier than we're used to. Last semester, both he and I had easier schedules, and we were talking so much more, and I was feeling sort of not great about it, especially about being around eachother literally almost 24/7 this summer. He's starting a new school term from next week though, and hopefully we can coordinate our waking up and sleeping times better from then. Hope everyone else is having a nice weekend!!

I was super busy today. I am going to have to make time in the morning to record these things!

Basically, have done well.... had two hamburgers yesterday for dinner, and today some rice/chicken dish, which were probably a bit over calorie budget, but at least I didn't like go off and eat even more later out of like frustration or something. And hit the gym for about 40 min today, too.
