4 months out - how do i balance it now

I haven't been to the gym in nearly 4 months now for various different reasons. Before that, i used to go 5 times a week. I was in very good shape however as you can imagine i have now put on a stone and i have also lost a lot of definition. In relation to that i have also bulked up a little (but as i said lost definition), this just goes to show how important rest is in the muscle building process.

Anyway, moving on... i am starting back in the gym today, which i plan on doing very little, mainly just stretching and a few lights weights to wake the body back up. My question is, how do i get what i am aiming for?

Aim: I want to keep the bulk that i have gained from my rest but i also want get my definition back

A - If i do a lot of cardio i will loose some of that body fat and gain back some definition but this also means that i will loose some of my bulk.

B - If i do a lot of weights, i will stay bulked up, however it will be very hard to gain definition back (especially around the abdominal area)

How do i balance this out, what exercises should i be doing most, what food should i be eating etc...

Any advice in any areas would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

IMO it's usually best to get a little bigger than you want to be in the end, and start restricting calories and doing cardio (along with weights).

The bulk that you gained in your 4 months of inactivity is most likely fat. So if you "like" the sound of being "fat big" and not "muscle big" then by all means.

Just know that if you bulk for muscle, and get a little bigger, then start cutting, it'll be much easier for you to lose fat and gain that definition that you want.
