I am at my wit's end. Does anybody know what is wrong? I tell my doctor, he's the one who wants me to lose weight and he won't believe me.

I want a gastric bypass and I told my doctor that but he said that I would need to lose 60 pounds before a surgeon would even touch me. He said that they would put me on a liquid diet of 900 calories a day but he says that I will not stick to it. Am I doomed?

Tammy

By your title, are you suggesting that you are gaining on 900 calories per day?

Yes!

I think I have tried to diet so many times that I have screwed up my set point. I was told by a dietician that is possible. My doctor does not agree. Who's right?

I highly doubt you are gaining on 900 calories. If you are, you need to get tests done on things such as thyroid.

Not to discredit you, but I've come across a lot of people, some bigger than you, who swore they were eating roughly 1k cals per day. After some digging, it always turned out they were inaccurate with their measurements.

Setpoint doesn't change all that much. Settling point does.

How could anyone know how many cals you are eating?

Here's the bottomline.

You are either eating more than you think or you have a medical issue and need a better doc to help you resolve the issue. Have you ever had blood work done to test for things such as thyroid output?

Right, and that would be most extreme case of hypothyroidism. I have ever seen. Even so, there would be other side ffects that should accompany a metabolic slow down of this magnitude.

I have never seen a thyroid condition that could result in such an extreme metabolic retardation...

Steve, with all due respect I have been tested and my thyroid is fine.

I know how much I am eating.

How much do YOU think I am eating to gain weight?

Maybe they did the test wrong or I got someone else's results.

Trevor, how much can a thyroid condition slow my metabolism?

As an actuall figure? I can't give you. As this varies greatly between people. But, I've never heard of a case as extreme as yours.

Maybe your body is some how not establishing proper levels of thyrotropin. Which means your thyroid is not being properly stimulated. However, I HIGHLY doubt this would be the only reason for such an EXTREME metabolic slow down. Mainly because, you would experience other side affects. Such as, fatigue, Menstrual problems, skeletal muscle aches,Cold intolerance, and MANY more.

Honestly, I suggest you get a second opinion. Another blood test from another doctor.

Again, I suggest you use Fitday.com. Document EVERY thing you eat in an entire day. Write down your activities for the day. Post back with your general daily routines. this will give us a better understanding...

LOL, you don't have to worry about disrespecting me. I was simply asking if you got any tests done.

I know how much I am eating.

Ok, then your body is a walking fusion reactor and has the ability bend the rule of thermodynamics.

That would seem to be the case... You have any thoughts as what type of medical condition could result in this type of case, Steve?

I'd listen to this advice, all joking aside.

And this.

Thank you Trevor. I am going to go to another doctor and have the test redone.

The other thing I don't understand is that I have been exercising. We have an eliptical machine at our apartment complex gym. I burn about 100 calories a day on it so I am actually at 800 calories a day and gaining. I wish I could exercise harder but I have bad knees. At least the eliptical machine is low impact.

Well I hope you keep us posted as this would be the most extreme case I've ever seen.

You eat the same exact foods 7 days a week?

Steve, why are you being so fat phobic? We fat folks get enough crap from people like you. I came here for help. Thank God Trevor showed me some compassion.

Steve, if you are going to be mean please do not respond. Fusion reactor? What is that supposed to mean?

Trevor, you are a real sweetie. I wish there were more people in the world like you.

Yea, I wasn't making for of you. Fat phobic couldn't be further from the truth.

But I'll certainly leave ya be.

Best of luck.

Hey Tammy - I too think tests would be the best option. I can guarantee you that nobody on this site is going to make fun of someone else- just try to encourage others and offer advice. Good luck and let us know how everything goes.
