I own some dumbbells, and have visted a couple'a gyms, but over all the machines, EZ-bars, and things with wires or springs - my favourite 3 workout bits of gear are my own body, a medicine ball, and a 20 lb metal rod, (and am considering adding "Rope" to the list, after I fiddle about and find some funky exercises I can do with rope)
I have no doubt that precision machines and whatnot give a more efficient workout and make your target muscles nice and attractive - but that's never really interested me and the gym bores me.
Between body weight exercises (push ups, chin ups, sit ups), throwing a Medicine ball about - or holding onto it to make bodyweight ex. harder, and using the bar for more traditional weight lifts (Yes, a 20lb bar can be very hard to curl if you're holding one end and the other is out in front. Leverage and gravity is a bitch. With almost every Bar movement the weight is hanging off in the distance - it would give someone more dedicated than me forearms like an ape.) I can hurt myself more than an hour at the gym has ever done.
I mention all this for three reasons -
R 1 - I want to say it, it makes me feel special to tell everyone my opinion as if they cared.
R 2 - I want to hear if anyone else feels similarly/does similar things.
R 3 - I'm considering making a little guide. I've seen other such guides around online (such as "ShovelGlove" - which is by some guy who believes you can do a full workout with a sledge hammer and some simple repeating movements), and being the kind of person I am, I am convinced me adding my say to the great massnet I could change the world.
I'd say that covers everything.
Cheers.
