Hey everyone,

Well, I an 6'2" and weight about 235-240lbs. I am just starting to go back to the gym again, andI REALLY want to lose that much weight before all of the awesome things that summer has to offer, haha. At least go down from a size 38-36... I was wondering, is this possible? How many calories should I intake per day and how many should I try to burn? Hopefully this amount of weight loss may make me look alittle better and feel more comfortable in my own skin. ANy advice and comments are appreciated. Thanks :D

Hi Brandon, and welcom to WLF.

Rather than repeat a lot of threads, I'd like to suggest that you go through a couple of journals:
1) Steve's journal - "A Journey, not a Destination". Steve is a local guru around here who has helped a whole bunch of us on exactly this question. His journal is filled with loads of great information, in between lots of adulation from his female fans.
2) My journal -- not because it has anything profound in it, but I had to struggle with all these issues and Steve helped me understand them. Perhaps by reading about my struggle to do that, you can get some good ideas you can use.

Wow,this is frustrating, lol. I just want to lose the weight, not gain too much muscle or anything. I hate being so techical about everything... like 5 million of these, and 2 million of these (figure of speach). I just want to burn calories and lose the weight, not have this take up my entire life.

The more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn while doing nothing. With that said, you should try to maintain as much muscle you can while in a caloric deficit.

Also, if you are in a caloric deficit, your body will try to rid itself of the items that are using the most engery--MUSCLE! You aren't going to gain a lot of muscle while in a deficit, but maintaining that muscle you have is going to make you look better after you lose the unwanted fat.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the human body isn't an easy subject. What is your end goal? Is it a number on the scale, or does it also have to do with looking good at your goal weight? I would rather be a lean, tone 130 vs a frumpy chubby 130.

Go here, look at the first post, and read the article. It looks like it's really long, but that's because of people's comments on the article. It should take about 5 minutes of your time. You DO have 5 minutes to help you lose weight right? clicky clicky

My problem is I dont know how many calories... too little and the body will start to store as fat... too many and I will not lose weight because it will even out.

Yes it's possible.

If you want to lose weight fast forget the calories. Try low-carb.

Also, it's good that you exercise while dieting. Research shows that you lose less muscle mass and strength if you exercise.

If you want to lose 25 pounds in 2 1/2 months, you won't have to worry at all about gaining muscle. In fact, your number one worry will be losing whatever muscle you have.

Like I said before, there's LOTS of information here about your questions, but if you aren't willing to invest the time, well . . .

And yes, the weight loss thing is very hard. That's why 2/3 of all Americans are overweight, and why 95% of all diets fail. And the "easier" the solution, the more likely it is to fail in the long run.

I want to use some of the machines at the gym, but I have no idea which to use, half of them HOW to use them, and how much (repetitions) to use them.

Hey Brandon James! Does anyone call you BJ? First, congratulations on making a renewed commitment in your life to be fit and eat healthy. Summer is a motivator for most. We want to be able to do things. You don't have much weight to lose so I think your goal is entirely do-able.

I'm one of those people who ascribe to the K.I.S.S. method. Keep It Simple Stupid. I know there's a lot of knowledge and theories about weight loss, muscle gain, nutrition, etc. etc. etc. but I disagree that it should be a complicated issue. Your commitment to losing weight is not in question. And commitment is all you need.

Beyond commitment, we all need a little help with finding out which tools will work best for us. Different tools work for differnt people. If you simply want to lose weight, one of the first things you can do is go to: to determine how many calories you should be eating based on height, weight, gender and fitness activity. Then it instructs you to subtract a certain number of calories to create a calorie deficit. There's all kinds of calculator tools available on the web, I'm only suggesting one I use.

Once you calculate how many calories to cut back on, commit to 4-5 times per week exercise. If you wanna go daily no problem, just make sure to build rest into your regime, otherwise your body will build it in, with injury or fatigue. Figure out what YOU like for exercise, even if it's just walking or cycling. I always love that Rene Zellwegger, when asked how she lost the weight after Bridge Jones, simply said "I literally walked my _ss off!" Make it fun, something you like, and you'll be more likely to stick to it.

My sister-in-law is a certified fitness coach who runs marathons, is black belt karate and plays competitive soccer. Once I asked her "what do I need to do to lose weight" and she said jog one hour a day and don't expect results until 6 weeks. I took her up on it and lost a lot of weight. The great thing about exercise is it will further curb your appetite and make portion control easier.

Now to the harder part for most of us. How do you choose a healthy eating plan? Some say low carb (seems to work particularly well for men), but I found that interferred with my ability to exercise and live in a cold climate so us polar bears need our carbs. You probably know what to eat, but if not, there's tons of info on the web about healthy eating plans. To keep it simple, figure out what you're going to eat for meals and snacks and then buy the stuff. No junk obviously. Cut back on sugar drastically and you will be incredibly happy with the results.

I agree that too much info can deter people from beginning. Sometimes it's better to start with a little info and learn as you go. Read books, read people's diaries as Tom suggested, but don't think you have to incorporate every single thing you learn into your personal plan. You will do what works best for YOU. We must allow ourselves to learn all there is to learn, because no one can learn nutrition in the 2.5 months you will be losing this weight. LOL It's a journey.

Congrats for starting yours!! Hope to see your succees...you could start your own diary in Weight Loss Diary (found under the Motivation section of the threads). This really helps to stay accountable to yourself and garners tremendous support from others.

Success to you! Oh, machines at the gym, get an employee to show you how to use them. That's their job. Sometimes I just ask people working out to show me and they never, never mind showing me.
