12lbs Down!

I was probably a little crazy for starting my new diet / workout regiment the week before Thanksgiving, but I figured a head start would help me as opposed to jumping on the bandwagon come the New Year.

As stated before, I've been working out for about 2 months now, and I'm down 12lbs and about 3% body fat. I can't help but feel that my progress is a little slow. Watching the new season of The Biggest Loser, some of those contestants are dropping as much weight as I've lost in ONE week. Am I doing something wrong? I hit the gym 5 days a week (3 being lifting / 30 min cardio days, while the other 2 days are purely cardio for an hour). I pretty much only drink water, all day. Cut my calories anywhere from 400-800 daily. Started taking protein shakes post-work out. And even started taking multi-vitamins infused w/ super greens, Essential Fatty Acids (omega 3& 6), and a rapid core thermal fat burner.

I'm open to new ideas, but it seems like such a let down whenever I jump on the scale. It went from being so excited to see how much I lost; to now, the same number every time.

Here's me on 11/22/10:

I see a lot of progress in your pictures, so just keep doing what you're doing and don't worry about the number on the scales. You're building muscle and losing fat, so the number won't move as fast but you can see and feel a difference.

I think you're done GREAT!!!!! Hang in there and know that you're accomplishing a lot.

My 2 Cents, for what it's worth...

I love watching Biggest Loser, and it does inspire me, however I know not to compare my weightloss experience to the contestants. These people are exercising for hours and hours a day and I have read that their "week" is really like 10 days. Plus, many of the contestants have hundreds of lbs to lose so the weight will come off of them faster. They are not working, going to school, or with their families, so they literally have 24/7 to devote to weightloss. You just can't compare that to real life.

Everyone always loses weight faster in the beginning when you are just starting out. Changing your diet and adding exercise is a shock to your system. This might be why your weightloss has slowed, since you are past this beginning point and your body is getting used to your routine. And as others have said when you are lifting weights the number on the scale might not move as quickly as you would like because you are building muscle. But lifting weights is great, because no one wants a skinny, flabby body. And by adding muscle you can burn more calories even while you are resting.

Just remember that losing weight slowly and changing your diet and exercise gradually is more likely to lead to maintaining your loss once you hit your goal weight. I would suggest breaking up your overall goal into little ones, and concentrating on that instead of the big picture. You'll be more likely to focus and not get overwhelmed.

And by the way, you can definitely see a difference in your pics! I wish losing 12 lbs would improve my body as well as it did yours! Good luck & keep at it!

Great job on the progress to date.

Simple suggestions that might help.

Do interval training on some of the days and less cardio.

Shift your calorie intake from day to day....eat 300 more calories on some days than you do on other days. This calorie confusion keeps your metabolism challenged and stops it from slowing down. This can help to prevent weight loss plateaus.

Sort of the diet version of muscle confusion. The need to change your exercise program every 4-6 weeks to maximize adaptation.

I hope this helps. But, you are doing great...keep it up.

Good luck!
