Well... today was the day. I finally reached my original goal of 200 pounds or lower, and I'm at 199 according to the scale, so I am very content. I've been getting closer and closer and thinking about the actual numbers lately. I started at 300 pounds, I'm around 200 now. I lost 1/3 my original body mass.. that's 33% less of me than when I started. And looking at it now, that's 50% of what I currently weigh. I LOVE thinking about those numbers

So I had a diary before but in a fit of frustration deleted it about a month ago. This is round two. My current goal is to get to 180 pounds which will put me at a BMI of just below 25, meaning I'll no longer be considered overweight. After I get there I'll see how I like it and figure out what I want to do next.

So if you're curious as to how I lost the weight... it's kind of a long story. Not in a, "it'd take a novel to tell you" sense, but it just took me a good amount of time. Some of you may be familiar with what I'm about to say:

It started my senior year in high school when I was at my max weight, 300 pounds. On a routine trip to the doctors I found out that I had high blood pressure (160/100) and my doctor said that if I couldn't get it down naturally then he'd put me on medication. At 17/18 years old I didn't want to take medication for my health, so I started using an elliptical machine every day. I started out at four minutes and gradually increased to 60 minutes of the span of a few months.

I never changed my diet during this time, so I lost some weight (I believe bringing me down to about 280), but I didn't see huge results. My blood pressure dropped though, so my doctor was happy and I was happy.

I started college sometime shortly after. By that point I had moved on to actually running on the road or on a treadmill but it was limited to once or twice a week. I maintained that sort of running schedule for at least a year. During that time I didn't lose any additional weight.

So from when I started until then was about two years. Over that two year period I gradually began eating healthier. It started with carrots. I stopped buying chips and crackers and started munching on carrots... a huge, huge, huge amount of carrots. I was going through a few 4 pound bags a week at some point.

Slowly this developed. Soon enough I was eating cottage cheese and fruit for breakfast, carrots and a healthy sandwich for lunch, and chicken and vegetables for dinner. Because I did it so slow it didn't seem like a diet. The weight started flying off. My running began increasing as my weight decreased. As of now the furthest I've ran is 7 miles straight, and my goal by the end of this summer is to be able to run a half marathon (13.1 miles).

What can I say? I'm the happiest person I know. I see people I haven't seen in a while and they're shocked at how much I've lost. I've always carried my weight well, so people underestimated how much I weighed and how good I could really look. I'm glad I did this slow. It's never been a diet to me, it's been my lifestyle change.

So I'll use this to update my weight, what I've done for the day and how I'm feeling. Sorry if I get a little emotional sometimes, still trying to get rid of some of mental baggage I have from losing all this weight!

Here's to seeing where this takes me! Good luck to everyone!

PS: sorry this is so long! To those who read this, I applaud you!

Just got back from a couple hours of some intense racquetball. Was on campus for 12 hours today... ugh. Only one class tomorrow morning though and then I'm done for the week!

The weekend is supposed to be warm (30's to 40's) so I plan on doing some nice long runs. Haven't been running nearly as much as I was a few months ago because it's been so cold; my biggest problem is that my feet go numb thanks to poorly insulted shoes, and it's really no fun running when I can't feel what I'm running on.

It was so nice out today, but unfortunately I couldn't get any use out of it :(

I was so sore from playing racquetball two days in a row, it still hurts to walk; the pain has gotten better but it's still pretty bad. Hoping I can salvage the weekend with a run tomorrow, but I'll hold off if I'm still in pain. Suppose all I can do now is keep up with my diet and try to even things out.

Not sure if anyone would be interested in this, but I play a couple instruments and make songs sometimes. Finished one today and figured I'd share. I'm an amateur though so don't expect anything amazing :p. Let me know what you think!

Hey Conkel,

Major grats on losing 1/3 your body weight! That's phenominal! I got a big laugh out of seeing your picture of the scale at 199. I would totally do the same thing. :rotflmao:

200 lbs is my current goal weight so I'm quite jealous. I wish you the best of luck on your continued efforts.

40 degrees out today, which is awesome. Just got back from a 3.5 mile run at around 8:45 min/mile. There's still ice on the ground and I'm still rusty from the crappy runs I've been going on over the past month or two, so I'm expecting my pace to get to around at least 8 min/mile once everything gets moving again.

It's supposed to be nice out all week (nice to me is anything above freezing) so I'm pumped. Hopefully I'll be able to get five days of running in a row in for the first time since November. On Thursday it's suppose to even get above 50 so I might take my bike for a cruise.

Here's to nicer weather!

Haha thanks, and good luck to you. I'll be sure to check in to your journal sometime soon

What an AH-MAZING accomplishment! No joke, I love the pic. Congrats to you!
Thanks a lot :)

Hey Conkel,

Congrats on being under 200! Awesome job! It was FINALLY abover freezing here this weekend...actually it was high 40's yesterday and about 40 today...it was great! I am looking forward to being able to run outside again!!

Haha over 50 here today! Thanks

Ran three miles earlier, went in shorts and a thermal, had to take the thermal off halfway through it was so nice out. Loving this weather. Doing well for the most part with my diet.

A coworker of mine told me today that I was looking "scarily thin." I told him that people were just so used to me being so big that when they look at me now they don't expect me to be as small. When I'm 180 he'll probably think I have some sort of eating disorder.

Too funny. That reminds me of when I dropped a lot of weight in high school. I went from 215 to 185 or so. My coach pulled me aside one day and asked me if I had an eating disorder because I was getting "too thin." I was far from being too skinny. In truth I think he was just pissed that part of his defensive line was shrinking :)

Hey,

Glad to see you've started a new Diary!!!

Just wanted to say congrats again on your Journey so far, and your running sickens me..7 miles straight!! Ive just started the C25K and 7 miles straight seems like an impossible task (at the moment) but a half marathon is also something Im hoping to do, possibly next year.

Anyway, congrats again and keep up the hard work :D

:seeya:

Wow! Congratulations on 100 pounds! That is quite an accomplishment and running 7 miles straight very impressive. I was just wondering, in your opinion, do you think that the elliptical or the treadmill was better for you? I want to start getting into running but I have a bad knee so I’m a little worried. Anyways, reading your diary is really motivating. Congratulations again!

Hahaha doesn't get much better than that

Thanks! I'm sure you're past this already but I remember thinking running even half a mile straight was impossible. Just pay attention to your body as you run more and you'll be there before you know it

This is a hard call for me, not because I think one is better than the other but because I don't want to give you advice that could potentially hurt you more! I would say for a fact that the elliptical has far less of a stress impact, but before you start anything I'd recommend talking to your doctor first if you haven't already and see what they recommend for your condition. With that said though, what kind of pain do you have? How long has it been around for and what makes it worse?

So I've been out of town for about a week now, hence me not updating my journal... was visiting my girlfriend and naturally eating like garbage most of the time. We kept pretty active though and upon weighing myself when I got home it turns out I lost 1.5 pounds since my last weight in. Extremely happy with that considering I've been doing nothing, so I reduced my ticker to 197.5!

The weather is getting better and better, so now that I'm back I plan to pick up my running schedule again. Also going to stick to my diet pretty strict for a bit (if I can help it). I've been seeing a lot of myself in the mirror lately and I think I'm finally starting to understand that I look like a completely different person. Here's to going outside shirtless by the summer!

Ran about 2.5 miles earlier, been doing well with my diet so far today.

Best part of the day so far: I was able to buy a sweatshirt.. and the size? MEDIUM! I can't remember every wearing a medium anything, never ever. Very happy about that :)

Got a bunch of "new" music if anyone is interested. It's basically all just demo tracks but some are pretty decent I think. Press play on one and it'll cycle through them all, let me know what you think!

It started around Christmas time they started hurting after working all day. Now they only hurt after I exercise or sit for a long time. The pain is hard to describe, they just feel sore and achy and sometimes they click and pop. lol but anyways i made a doctor’s appointment for Saturday and will ask him what he thinks. Thanks so much for the advice, and congrats with the medium!:hurray:

Just got back from a run somewhere over three miles. The weather has been awesome lately, no more below zero temperatures or anything like that, this is looking good! Ended up eating some crap last night but I guess I did it within reason since it didn't effect my weight this morning.

I never thought I'd differentiate so much between weather this cold. I'm practically jumping for joy because its above 30 degrees out and people are still out there complaining its too cold. I love it

Ran 3.5 miles today after taking a break yesterday. I was planning on a longer run tomorrow but unfortunately it looks like we're going to get some snow so I might just go for a short run in the morning.

I've recently started throwing an idea around in my head: I'm thinking of going vegetarian for a month. I have nothing against eating meat I just think it'd be an interesting test for myself. I'm going to start researching it... maybe start within the next few weeks. We'll see!

Major congrats are due just for being able to purchase a medium sweatshirt! It's been a decade since my "larges" didn't have at least one X in front of them, and I haven't seen "Medium" since high school! lol

Great work my friend. You continue to be an inspiration.

Go to and follow the instructions. Copy the BB code you get after creating your ticker and paste it into the signature box under your user control panel. Hope that helps.
