Company wellness programs or challenges ideas?

I recently just joined my companies wellness team and we are trying to gather different ideas for challenges that can be done to help our employees become healthier. Currently we do a lot of challenges involving the use of pedometers and getting a certain number of steps on a weekly basis. There are a number of other ones that we have done. And for doing these challenges, not only does it help keep our employees healthier, they can also earn money towards a bunch of different things. I am wondering if anyone else is doing these sorts of things and i'm looking for new and fresh ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I actually have a class project to implement this exact thing for the faculty at my college. :p

My personal input: Unless everyone in the company has, generally, the same work hours and break times, it's difficult to make a time for everyone to do any sort of exercise class. (Ie: Lunch hour spin class.) Also, people tend to be extremely bitter and cynical when it comes to their physical activity and like to blame anything they can, such as their work hours, as the reason for their inactivity, so those are issues that need to be worked around.

So yeah, I like your idea of a "challenge" which people can get done on their own time. You can do walking challenges, or if you have a common/local gym you can see if you can do a stamp challenge. It really depends on what your resources and environment are. Also, if you have different departments in the company, that's a great opportunity to have team challenges.

One last thing, you need to make sure that management supports whatever you do, and I don't just mean authorizing it. My college had a survey done among its faculty and one of the biggest reasons why people didn't participate in collegiate health activities was because their supervisors and mangers didn't actively support and encourage them to.

Our management is ok with whatever we want to do, I don't want to say we have an unlimited budget but we basically get whatever we want. Wellness is insainly highly valued at my company. i'm just looking for different ideas. Now keep in mind the employees sign up only if they want to, they are not forced to. They earn money by doing challenges
for example one challenge last year we had a football challenge. this was a steps challenge how ever many people signed up where put on teams (I think we had over 100 sign up, we also allow spouses to sign up). but we had teams of 8 or so on a team and it was a steps/pedometer challenge. We had a regular season and at the end of the regular season the top so many teams went to the playoffs and faced off, then the superbowl. The coaches of the team earned double steps during certain weeks. It was a pretty fun challenge. And actually the winning team got tickets to the local NFL football game and got to sit up in our skybox. pretty sweet deal i think

So i'm looking for new and exciting ideas kind of like that. They don't have to be pedometer challenges. Thanks for any help or any new ideas!

That's great! My company has a wellness program that's sponsored by them. We get discounts off our insurance premiums, and also can earn points to get prizes with by doing a certain amount of steps per day and/or taking health courses, etc. I really enjoy it, it's an extra incentive. We can earn points by: using the pedometer, going to the gym, taking courses in healthy eating, exercising, etc. Having cholesterol and BP tests yearly, weight (and also get points for improving scores). Maybe you could do something around food, having employees make and bring healthy lunches. I don't know how many people you have or how much it costs, but there are websites like Power of Vitality that have health tracking and tips. Many of them work with companies to provide the service for their employees, but again I don't know how much they charge for that.

Fitness classes in the workplace: Onsite exercise can be much more convenient for workers. Still, onsite classes require logistical planning and coordination with attention to details.
