My probable misunderstanding of weight loss

Hi guys,

I've just signed up to this forum to get some feedback regarding my understanding of health, fitness and weight loss. I'm 29 years old, male, 79kgs (174 lbs). I'd always been able to eat whatever I felt like without putting on any weight, but this has started to change over the last couple of years. I've started to put on a tiny gut for the first time, so that's pushed me to watch what I eat and start exercising regularly.

I want to ensure that I'm getting the most from my efforts, so I've joined this forum to get some feedback on what I have come to understand about fitness. I don't want to be working my ass off for no good reason!

What I'd like:
To lose the little gut before summer (November here in Australia), and tone up a bit if possible. I have the beginnings of a six pack up top, but it's covered by the little gut down the bottom.

My current plan:
Exercise every day (half hour jog one day, half hour sprint/pushup/situp/burpee combination every other day). Eat healthier foods, drink only water, and maintain a calorie consumption of 2070 or less every day.

Based on my understanding, if I stick to this plan, I should lose the gut. It's my understanding that, with my body, if I'm consuming 2070 calories a day I'll be losing weight - regardless of the food/drink that I'm consuming. For example, I could eat healthy foods all day, and come dinner time, if I've only consumed 1600 calories, I could splurge on a chocolate pudding or something and I'll still be losing weight, as long as I stick to the 2070 calories. Or even more extreme - I could live off a complete diet of pizza and coke and still be losing weight, as long as I only consume 2070 calories' worth. Is that correct?

Obviously I don't want to live that sort of lifestyle - I'm sure a diet of pizza and coke would be HORRIBLE for various parts of my body. But I do love chocolate pudding, so if I can have it once every so often and still remain under the 2070 cal. per day, combined with doing half an hour exercise every day, is that absolutely fine?

Thanks for your help in advance! :)

What you say ties up with what I have read online.

Obviously there is the nutrional value of food to consider but as far as weight loss is concerned as long as you are burning more calories than you are consuming then you will be loosing weight.

People who are successful at weight loss often have a plan that fits their lifestyle and that they are motivated to stick with.

Some people like to diet alone; others like social support. It's best to follow something that you can stick with for a lifetime.

So choice is up to you.
