Lower back pain during Crunches

Alright, so I'm about 5'6" and weigh 226lbs. I've recently started the P90 program by Tony Horton(Not to be confused with p90x) and at the end of the Cardio program they do an ab workout. I am unable to the majority of the different ab routines because it causes lower back pain. Is there anything I can strengthen during that time that may help me be able to do them at some point?

Oh and yes I am following the dieting guide set for this program so I hope the eventual weight loss will cause the problem to cease. But any alternative Ab exercises, or something to strengthen my back would be awesome. Thanks

my first thought is you aren't doing the crunches correctly. crunches are easy to do wrong.

My best suggestion to see if you're doing them right or not is this: during all floor ab exercises, you should be consciously using your abs to push your lower back INTO the floor (or ab ball). This pre-activates and tenses the ab muscles, and basically keeps you from using your back to do anything except stabilize the core and allows the abs to pull the torso towards the lower body.

Also, make sure you're not trying to move the hips...that's one of the reasons sit-ups really suck..they work the hip flexors more than the abdominals.

It could be that you have a weak lower back and/or bad posture creating back pain that amplifies when you try to do crunches.

cautions in crunches

During crunches, we have to take care of certain things as,

Make sure your lower back is always pressed firmly into the floor or towel when doing abdominal exercises. Accomplish this by laying down and tilting your pelvis back--this move is called the pelvic tilt--so that the small of your back is flat on the floor. Keep it there while doing leg lifts.
keep few things in mind so that you get a healthy exercising.
