Knee Pain

I've been running a lot the last several months on a treadmill, and I have noticed knee pain in my left leg. It is more of an uncomfortable feeling than pain, and when I touch it it feels like a bruise.

For my future career, I can not risk having bad knees so I have laid off all cardio for the last month. I haven't done squats in a while, and I figured that maybe I need to start if it will help strengthen my knees to avoid injury.

1. Do squats strengthen the knees?
2. Should I start doing light squats now, or give it another month or two until the uncomfortable feeling goes away (what if it doesnt?)
3. What are some good stretches/exercises I can do to rehab my knee?

Thanks.

I have also been feeling pain in my knees - well more of a hot, tingling sensation, with aches, plus a shooting pain in the centre of my right knee. I have had two pregnancies in quick succession, my youngest is 1 yr - and am trying to get into shape, by cross training, jogging, circuits, ballet and yoga. I did a stint of road running, which I think started it off, but lately even walking seems sore. I don't want to stop exercising - anyone have any suggestions?

knee pain

Hi, I'm a musculoskeletal physio and just come across this thread while looking for something else. If you're having knee pain whilst running it can be due to many factors and also a combination of factors individual to you. Therefore there is no one answer that is suitable for everyone. For some people, it can be foot issues, something as simple as not enough cushioning or support in your trainers or flat arches, for others more core stability issues -can especially be the case after pregnancies. Running is a high impact activity and is therefore less forgiving on your joints and weak links than an exercise like for example yoga or swimming. In terms of advice, I would obviously say have an individual assessment with a physio to ascertain what your particular weaknesses are and to have a programme tailored to you but in the meantime or if that is not an option I would recommend the following:cut down the amount you run- time and/or distance if your knees are still hurting -stop running and try something lower impact for a while- swimming, pilates is great for core stability etc; check your footwear is suitable -not too old/worn giving you enough support;
squats do strengthen the knees but may not be the right exercise for your particular problem - try them- say 12 reps once a day then leave for 24 hours to check they haven't aggravated your knees (often takes 24 hours to show up any irritation) if okay you can up the number of sets and reps (gradually). Stretches are also important -look up stretches for your hamstrings, quads and especially ITB (outer part of thigh)-foam rollers work best for the latter. Mark the date you started in your diary and a review date for say 3 weeks on - if your knees are still sore and not improving by your review date, I would then recommend that you see a physio. I hope that's of help.

Hello friend, If you are suffering from knee pain, see a doctor / orthopedic surgeon who can determine the cause and prescribe an appropriate treatment and pain management plan. This site covers only the more common types of knee pain. It will familiarize you with various causes, treatments, and prevention of knee pain, but please do not attempt to diagnose yourself. your doctor may prescribe medications to help relieve pain and to treat underlying conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout. Thanks.
