Losing weight around hips?

Hi, everyone.
Can someone tell me what some good ways are to lose some weight around the mid-section? (like hips/stomach)

I'm doing some research for my cousin. She is 16 years old, 5'7", and has a good figure (I don't know her exact weight yet. I'll try to learn that tomorrow), but with a little bit of extra weight around her mid-section.

Is there a safe way to reduce only the area with extra weight? (I read somewhere that "dieting" is not good for people that are still growing, but exercise like Crunches should be good, right?) I found some articles saying that pills like Hydroxycut aren't good ideas (not safe, and don't work), so I assume those are not to be considered.

Any suggestions are appreciated! :)
Here is the goal, I assume:

I'm no expert, new to the boards myself. I would think that the exercises covered in the "How to" Abs guy in the sticky above would accomplish what you want.

Upper leg exercises would likely get the job done for hips, and I don't know about anyone else, but when I do push-ups I feel like that area gets a good workout, but maybe it's just because I've been working on my form and clenching my butt like crazy when doing them, lol.

These are my humble opinions, good luck.

You cannot spot reduce fat. Yes, you can work specific muscles to strengthen them, and sometimes working specific muscles will achieve a slimmer look just becuase the muscle takes on a different shape/size.

but its not removing fat from the area around that muscle.

I have a question, would building the muscles in that area help to reduce the fat in that area from the muscles burning them? I feel like I am talking about spot reducing, which you can't do, lol.

Do the strengthened muscles just burn the fat from all areas of the body then? I'm afraid I am behind on my Biology.

No, muscles do not burn fat around the areas where you increase muscle mass. That would be spot reduction.

The body always chooses where to burn fat. Men store the most excess fat in the stomach, while women store it slightly lower in the hips, butt and thighs (and some in the breast tissue as well).

These areas are the last place to lose all their fat. Meaning, you could have good definition in the arms (toned) but might still have a bit of a gut to lose. That's why bodyfat tests are done from a minimum of 4 locations, and then averaged out.

Ahh, I see now. In my head that doesn't make as much sense, why not just burn the fat that is nearby? Of course, who am I to tell the human body how to work.

Thanks for the info, very insightful.

Daniel.
