Adult beverages (beer/wine/liquor)

Hi,

I am starting a fitness and nutriton program within the next couple of weeks and my goal is to really stick to the nutrition plan. On occasion, I would have a few beers on the weekend. I plan on elimating beer drinking for the first few months but I will be attending holiday parties throughout and I may want to enjoy an adult beverage at home from time to time.

If I was going to drink something, what should i have...a.k.a what's best for my body.

What are your goals for your new fitness and nutrition program?

Although, I don't think there is much difference, as long as you don't overindulge, meaning no more than 1 most days and 2-3 on rare occasions. Red wine has some potentailly good effects due to the reservatol it contains. Some people claim the carbs and protien in beer is beneficial for muscle building in small doses. And hard liquor is relatively harmless in small quantities, especially if you don't mix it with high sugar stuff like coke or other artificial sweetners like fruit juice with added high fructose corn syrup.

I am sure i will lose weight but my goal is to lose body fat and gain muscle.

at the same time? Because that;s not easy to do. It takes a lot of dedication and is painfully slow.

Most people choose one, or the other as a goal, and rotate between the two.

Reason being: you need excess calories to add significant muscle mass, but a calorie deficit to lose fat. its a paradox in the dietary needs really.

I agree, it's going to be hard but I just recently did P90X (home fitness workout if you are unfamiliar) and I lost a lot of fat and gained muscle all at the same time. I actually did not lose much weight but i was pretty satisfied with the results. I am 32 now but I used to lift weights in college (played football) so I think muscle memory came into play.

I was able to see these results while eating healthy during the week and not so good on the weekends. I also drank beer on the weekend.

This time around, I want to follow the nutrition plan to a tee so no more beer drinking and eating not so good on the weekends. I am very much looking forward to my results if I follow a nutriton plan 7 days a week.

Fact: There are about 7 calories per gram of alcohol, so even your least caloric shot (e.g. vodka or gin) is going to have MINIMUM 80 calories PER SHOT, also keep in mind that most drinks contain more than one shot. With a mixed drink, like a gin and tonic, you're looking at abou 250-300 cals/each so I'd say it's not WHAT you drink, but HOW MUCH that's going to make the difference.

Also, if you're dieting and you know you're going ot be social, schedule your cheat day for friday or saturday. This way, you can have a few drinks on your cheat day and stay sober hte rest of hte week with your diet in check.

def watch the mixed drinks, they can have loads of cals. But i think you should go out and have a good time at the parties, like someone said, use them as your cheat days. Just make sure it is not all the time.

Thanks for the replies

I may just stick with light beer then, maybe even start drinking miller 64 (64 calories).

I am starting a workout blog on November 16th and will be posting pics of myself without my shirt so there will be no room for cheating...at the beginning anyways.

1 oz vodka in sprite zero or some Crystal light is a good low cal drink. 5 cals per serving from the CL, and 65 from the 1 oz vodka. Alcohol to calorie ratio, this is the best. Wine is the next best, and beer is horrible.

Wine is probably the best for you in small doses. Everything in moderation is my goal. I have drank way too much over the last 5 years (mostly beer - like 3 or 4 a night 5 times a week or so, sometimes more on the weekend), and this has made me gain like 40lbs or so in the last couple years. (I eat healthy otherwise)

What about Crystal Meth and water? YOU might even lose some weight ;)

Seriously though, I wouldn't worry too much about the occasional slurge on alcohol over the holiday period, the effectiveness of a diet is in the long term application and shouldn't be too badly effected by a night or two of alcoholism.

Just go enjoy your nights out; IMO if you allow a fat loss plan to have a negative impact on your enjoyment of parties and such then it makes it less likely that you'll stick to the plan in the longer term

In order from best to worst, I would say:

Red wine
White wine
Spirits (neat, or with water)
Beer

And no more than two per day, or I will crack your knuckles with my ruler. ;-)

Red wine
White wine
Spirits (neat, or with water)
Beer

But i enjoy them in the opposite order!
