Fat and muscle loss

When dieting, if you are a higher BF do you lose more BF than muscle? What about when you are at a lower BF?

Example: Say you are 30%BF and you start dieting...The weight you lose will be mostly bodyfat right?

What if you are at a lower BF% such as 15%. Will you be losing an equal amount of muscle and fat?

What determines how much fat you lose in conjunction to muscle you lose. I hope this question is clear and thank you for your responses.

Thats a good question but is very hard to give a direct answer.
What type of diet do you speak of ? There are many types. Hi protein, hi carbs, or low on both, etc etc.
Also is the person you are asking about going to be weight training or exercising throughout the dieting, or just plain dieting ?
The reasons I ask these questions is because there are so many factors involved, I speak out of my own experiences, but when I first started I was on a strict diet but yet very high hi-protein and also alot of weight training. My experience is that i was actually building muscle while I was losing fat. I know this cause I had little muscle to begin with.
But, take someone who is on a lower protein diet than me, strict or not, with no weight or resistance training. That individuals outcome would be totally different than mine, especially if they are just lookin to lose weight plain and simple.
So with all these factors weighed in, there is no exact answer.
But if you know your goals, you can help in the process by altering your diet and training regimen.
Again, these are just my experiences with dieting and weightloss. Other people here may be able to give you a more scientific approach.

Yes, calorie partitioning does favor your lean body mass to some degree. In general, the more body fat that you have, the easier it will be to burn fat and maintain/gain muscle. Conversely, the leaner you are, the harder it will be for fat to come off and to maintain/gain muscle.

Other than those tendencies (key word here - they aren't set in stone), though, whether you lose fat or muscle will largely depend on your diet and training program. Provided you are lifting hard and eating enough protein, you shouldn't lose much, if any, muscle.

So basically it is safe to say, even if you are cutting calories, eating enough of protein, lifting hard, and doing cardio. You will maintain muscle while losing fat reguardless of your BF%.

You just listed my program in a nutshell when I was cutting, I maintained and even gained until I hit my goal drop weight. So yes.
Nice to meet ya leck. Good bass season this summer ? The weather wasnt good where im at. The fishin sucked.

Thanks, I need to get back on the ball, vacationed all of august, hurt my knees on a comeback early sept, feeling good now easing back in. Been lifting upper body again, slowly doing some light lower body (knees). I know i can lose weight when i manipulate my carb intake, but since i havent cut in a while, i dont want to lose muscle.

Good to meet you too. The bass were on and off this year, fished the entire month of august across the north east. Some lakes and days were hot some were slow...It just seemed like there are so many tournaments these days, every weekend day plus weekdays...The water around here is starting to cool down to the low 60s, smallies should turn on real soon. Plus all the pleasure boating morans are off the water now.

Hit the smallies pretty good in early july, then we had all that rain and the river went up and is just now gettin to where its gonna be good again, smallies are my favorite freshwater to hit.
Hey keep us updated on your progress !

Oh definitely, i would never sway from resistance trainign.

I ask more so because looking back on my eating log over the last year or so, i can see how my eating differs when at different stages of me working out. I know that when i first began working out, i lost fat and increased LBM at the same time. When i was at my lowest, it was hardetr to cut fat. I actually grew weaker when i was cutting so i had to increase my carb intake.

After a summer of vacationing, piss poor eating, and lack of exercizing, i've gained back fat. I need to cut now, but am afraid of losing muscle.

weight loss

I have tried all types of diets, pills: metabolife, green tea, slim fast, acai berry, you name it. What I have found is that I quickly reach a plateau. As I have gotten older, it is even harder for me to lose the weight. Compound that with the injury that I suffered at work and it makes it next to impossible. But I won't give up. What keeps me trying is that effort to not only almost get back to where I am comfortable but to where I am healthy. I am now taking a good look at my eating habits, what and when I eat. I have a plan that does not include a New Years Resolution but instead my resolution to myself.:sport:

Acai Berry worked for me and quite a few people I know.
