HIIT and the distance runner

Hey guys i am a distance runner, i typically run about 45 miles a week. Im 5' 9" and weigh about 140 so im not really fat or out of shape. However, i still have a layer of noticeable body fat, especially around my lower abs, which prevents me from achieving a toned look. Ive heard HIIT is a great way to cut down body fat but i don't know if this would hinder my running for the fall season. I was wondering if HIIT helps or hampers a long distance runner and if there was anyway to cut body fat and maintain my cardio condition.

I also make it a point to eat healthy, including good lean protien, and sufficient carbs. I workout at the gym regularly, using a workout plan to alternate daily between all major muscle groups.

Thanks for any and all help

just eat less calories if you want to drop bodyfat.

ok-- I am a 12 hour ironman

and 45 miles a week is alot of run miles

Are you doing anythign else?

for the lower ab fat-- I must say- not all bodies are created equal, and you may just have a geneitc proness to that.

With what Karky said--- Less calories may not be the answer, but calorie type could be.

Sorry Kark, but realize even if this dude is running a slow 9-10 minute mile, he is running AT LEAST between 6 and 8 hours a week. cutting calories is not really an option, he will desentigrate overall- including the muscle he is trying to show.

and as a claimed distance runner- Probably has long runs of 10+ more than once a week.

My question--- what have you done to BUILD the muscle you are trying to see, verses burning off the fat. Do you do leg raises? weighted side bends? andy floor sweepers? how about olym[ic type lifts, ie: squate, power clean, etc?

that's possible, but it will be hard getting rid of the abdominal fat without restricting calories.. and if he is genetically predisposed, cutting cals might not even work before he is at a very low BF%.

I don't do any other type of cardio actually because my runs are pretty exhausting most of the time i try to maintain about a 6:30 mile. Youre right flyinfree cutting calories isn't a very viable option I'm trying to train for fall cross country and I won't do very well if my body doesn't have the nutrients to fuel my workouts.

But like i said before i do regularly go to the gym. I do a lot of core work like abs and lower back and in addition to that i mostly focus on upper body muscle groups, things like bench press, bicep curls, deltoid and back exercises. I always thought running was a good enough workout for my legs i could be wrong though. If I am what would you recommend? I don't know if this makes a difference but im 16. Thanks alot I really appreciate you guys.

16

that is young, but I dont know that it makes a difference

Floor sweepers, and wighted leg lifts. Build the muscle.
