Heart rate question while running on treadmill

I've been working out and dieting for about 19 weeks now. I've lost 22 pounds so far and its going well. I'm doing the treadmill 4-5 times a week, elliptical on the days on I don't use the treadmill and lifting 3 times a week. I feel great and the weight is coming off :)

I've noticed that when I run on the treadmill (30 minutes, ~4mph) and use my heart rate monitor, I have some unusual numbers. My monitor is very simple, just max, avg, and low heart rate. When I use the treadmill, I have a high at 220 bpm, and avg of 150, and low of like 75. I'm worried about the spike to the high heart rate. When I use the elliptical, I don't have these spikes in heart rate.

Is this spike in heart rate a problem? I never feel any pain, dizziness, or numbness when I'm jogging but I thought I'd see what people in the know about these things think.

Anyone else have this happen?

Do you know if your heart rate monitor is functioning as intended? What brand is it? Is this a wrist mounted monitor with a chest strap? Does the treadmill have its own HRM system that can read off of a chest strap?

We need more info before we can suggest help for you.

Do you have a cardiac medical history? Have you been in for a physical where a Doc did an EKG?

I assume that since I don't have the spikes when I use the elliptical that it is working right. It is a chest strap HRM, and the treadmill does not read the signal from the heart rate monitor. Brand is Cardiosport, cost about ~$45.

I'm 39 and have never had a physical with an EKG. I've had no cardio problems. I started at 238, and was 216 last week.

The only thing I can think of aside from a possibly medical condtion (tachycardia) is that the vibration for running is messing with the chest strap and causing it to report the wrong heart rate. Just make sure the chest strap is tight enough. If it still occurs a trip to your doctor might be in your best interest just to make sure nothing is seriously wrong.

find out when you spike and take your HR the old fashioned way. Does the monitor have something that blinks every time your heart beats? mine does, so if I'm ever in doubt, I put my hand on my neck and see if I can feel my pulse as frequently as the little heart on my monitor blinks.

dont have any idea about that
