Help - need weight loss advice!!!!

I am looking for some advice regarding fat loss and losing weight.

I have just joined a gym (last week) and have been going every day Monday- to Friday. This is due to working in an office and I really enjoy using my lunch break to get to the gym and do some exercise so I'm not sat on my bum the whole day.

My routine at the moment is doing cardio every day (interval training) on an eliptical cross trainer for around 30 - 40 mins. I can't do longer because I have an hour for lunch. I am also doing some classes after work or during the day. These compromise of an hour of Body Pump or Body Conditioning which involves doing barbell free weight routines to a sound track and I do this 3 times a week. This really gets my muscles working and also gives me a small amount of cardio.

My problem now is that my weight seems to be staying the same or even going up and I'm getting worried because I feel too heavy right now.

I am 6 ft tall and currently weigh 12 stone. I usually weigh around 11 stone and this weight I feel comfortable with so anything more tends to make me feel heavy and also I don't feel as comfortable in my clothes.

When my relationship ended last year I exercised every day and lost about a stone in weight in about 4 weeks down to 10 3/4 stone. This was partly due to the stress at the time but it's weird that last year when I exercised less than I am now my excess weight started to fall off but now it's just staying the same.

I know that muscle weighs more than fat but I'm not very toned up and want to stay a slim size but toned rather than put on bulk.

If anyone has any advice as to how I could lose weight whilst toning up I would be really grateful as my current regime doesn't seem to be shifting it.

Many thanks in advance.

A couple pieces of advice. First, you just started a week ago, it's a bit early to see a noticeable change. Also as you noted, you may be adding muscle at the same time some fat is being shed. Measure your waist as a baseline as it will be a better indicator, at least to start with, than your weight. You will of course also start to see a difference in how your clothes fit.

Second, watch your diet. Ultimately weight loss depends on fewer calories in than calories being burned. A couple easy things to do if you've not already is drink water instead of pop, and eat whole grain carbs (bread, rice, pasta, etc...) instead of simple carbs (white bread, normal rice and pasta).

Congratulations on making the step to join and go to the gym! Now just make sure it becomes a routine, is something you look forward to (it's great you're enjoying it), and gets prioritized in your life so you don't end up like the majority of gym membership holders who go for a while and then never go back.

Thanks so much for that advice and information. I know it's not really about weight on the scales as there's so many factors but I guess after my relationship ended where the weight literally fell off with little or no effort it's a bit hard for me working out every day not seeing a similar reaction.

For me, luckily I have the option of instead of wandering around town in my lunch break looking for Paninis, I can now pop to the gym and get my metabolism up and running in the middle of the day.

Do you have any advice as to the programme I'm doing on a weekly basis or do you think it's good as it currently is? Also how long does it take before one sees results?

Mon - Body Conditioning (lunchtime), Body Pump (evening)
Tuesday - Body Pump (evening)
Wednesday - 30 mins elipitical trainer
Thursday - Body Pump (lunchtime)
Friday - 30 mins eliptical trainer

I guess looking back at that, I could do with more cardio.

You're welcome. Yes, a bit more cardio, perhaps one more session a week. The interval training is great though. Also, you could add a bit of lower rep/higher weight sessions to build some muscle. I know you don't want to bulk up but more muscle will increase the calories burned at rest and help with your goals. If you see you are getting to the edge of putting on more muscle than you would want, then cut back to just the body pump routines again. I expect you should start seeing results in another couple weeks or earlier.
