walk / jog

Hi I excercise 5 days a week for 30 minutes I always walk but I will first warm up then jog till my heart rate is up then walk for a while till my heart rate dropps a little then jog again so proboly jog every 3-5 minutes then after my walk/jog I do 5 minutes of adominal excerise is this effective will I loose weight doing just this I always keep my heart rate up most of the time but not like a run rate but just pumping a little

thanks

seems like very low intensity exercise. You need to get your heart rate WAY up there, and keep it up there for a good 30 minutes. Doing ab exercises isn't going to help you at all; you need to move some real weight, whether that means weights or bodyweight work.

There is more to loosing weight than cardio. First, a healthy, clean diet. Then exercise that challenges your body (but not beat it up) is a good way to start.

Personally, I would set a distance, try to keep a steady run/jog as long as I could, and walk the rest (if I could not run/jog all of it). Each day try to accomplish you set distance. When you have and feel like you can continue, do it, set a new distance, new speed, etc.

As for the ab work, well, if you are going to do that, you may as well do other exercises so you do a whole body workout and not just your abs.

There is a lot of info on this forum in both diet and exercise. Take some time to read and see what is mentioned. You may find some good suggestions and even answers to some questions.....

I excercise 5 days a week for 30 minutes.....will I loose weight doing just this?

You will gain, maintain or lose weight based on your caloric intake. Simple as that.

A person can do cardio for hours, lift weights diligently and do 300 sit-up's each day....but if they eat in excess of their needs, they'll gain weight/fat.

Fact is, there are millions of people who have lost weight by just diet alone. Adding exercise to the curriculum is not essential, but STRONGLY advised....for the calories it burns and other health benefits (respiratory, circulatory, psychological....just about everything!).

For most people here on this forum, your routine is on the weak side....limestix is correct; cardio should be at a moderate intensity and sustained for at least 30 minutes....and eventually work your way up to the level...say, of FlyinFree. :D

If you're in your 70's then your routine may be fine....but if you're younger and in good shape, I'd suggest amping it up a bit. Why don't you tell us more about yourself (age, weight, physical condition, etc).

thanks I am 31 and moderatly fat one more question no doubt increasing is effective. but I was told that weight loss is in moderate excerize. also that when you run that you burn sugars and not fats but when you walk it is fat is this accuerate in your opinion. also I proboly have 1600 to 2500 calories a day

thanks

2500 a day seems like too much, calculate your bmi and take off 500, maintain your calorie intake around there.

For the person who is not in shape, walking is fine. As you get in better shape, a more intensive workout would be preferable.

Time to do some research;

1. Determine your Basal metabolic rate.
2. Add the calories burned exercising
3. Calculate your food intake
4. Eat 500 kcals/day fewer than you burn and you will lose 1 pound of fat / week.

Doing weights will speed up your fat loss but don't do this until you are physically ready.

I wouldnt say that 2500 is too much, I am only 23 and weigh around 180 and my maintenance is like 3200 so you really need to do the calculations before you set your calories to ensure you are losing comfortably and not starving your body.

I calculated 29 bmi but I dont have a scale to get an exact so I had guess my weight my calorie calculation was between 2400 and 2900 for the somewhat active rateing excludeing my excercise well its between 2200 and 2650 for being inactive but I plan to proboly aim for maybee 1600-2000 apx what happens if I undereat and my body feals hungry is this not good either

also what I want to know is not recomendations of increasing is if I did only the 5 days a week of walking/jogging but keeping my heart rate up not letting it fall doing this I will proboly automaticly increase because I am not baseing my exercise off of distances but off of my heart rate if it drops i start jogging again till it pumps again if I stay at just that will it at least kinda work I used to exercise allot less and have increased to this level.

thanks

another question

another question is heart rate the key to excercise as long as I keep my heart rate up this is what counts because I was told that I should cross train but if I only walk or run if I keep my heart rate up is that what counts. or is it something with the muscle and that I need to cross train

another question is can I drop the 5 minutes of adominal exercises and just do 5 more minutes of my walk / run

thanks
