Americans Fatter in 37 States

The latest annual state-by-state obesity rankings don't paint a pretty picture:

* Number of states in which adult obesity rates went up: 37
* Number of states in which adult obesity rates went down: 0
* Number of states in which adult obesity rates went up for the third year in a row: 19
* Percentage of population that is obese in Colorado, this year's least obese state: 18.4
* Percentage of population that was obese in the four most obese states in 1991: 15% to 20%
* Number of states in which at least 1 in 4 adults is obese: 28
* Number of states in which at least 1 in 5 adults was obese in 1991: 0

It's sad.... obesity is just swarming through the population. Now that more manual labor type jobs are done by robotics, etc., and more positions are white collar it's gotten even worse. Now people just sit at work, come home, and sit there.... ALLLLLLLL day. The increase in technology is directly proportional to the increase in obesity rates...

I disagree, I believe its more the change of diet than the change of workload that has caused obesity. Dining has changed because of increased technology causing increased travel and less time to spend on a good meal.

Yep, and even though things are "easier" in life, people's schedules are typically more busy, so the average person laughs at the idea of preparing their own food, and opts to pick up White Castle at work instead...it's bad.

I don't think it's true. I mean when I go outside, I rarely see people of obese status. I question how they get these reports.

If you don't you're lucky! Everytime I see someone obese, I wonder how they could let themselves get that way, and I want to help them, but there is nothing I can do. I think there are a lot of factors in getting to that size. We just moved our office across town, and we are next to a McDonalds now. Today one of my coworkers tried to get me to walk over with her to get an ice cream cone. Luckily I had watermelon in the fridge, so I wasn't tempted.

I spent some time people watching at our state fair last week and there were very few "fit" people. They were either obese or skinny fat. I know that places that sell you everything deep fat fried and on a stick are not the places to find fit people, but there were 1.1 million people at the fair over a week and a 1/2, so there should have been a large mix. Instead it was mostly obese.

I don't wonder, I was there until recently. I have no excuse. I used to work out a lot in high school & college, but it was the classic case of not paying attention to what I ate, not being conscious of portion control, letting 'life' get in my way of staying fit... it all added up slowly over the years. Then you see a picture of yourself one day and its like :eek2: "HOLY ****!!! HOW DID I GET LIKE THIS???"

Now, people can either choose to remain that way, or they can choose to be proactive in their health and do something about it. They're the ones that can be 'helped'. Others will just resent it.

I haven't been to a fair in years, mainly because I don't like crowds. But even living in the SF Bay Area, where its a mix of obese, skinny fat, normal, and fit... it seemed the same 2 types were dominant.

on the Calorie Lab web site there is an article showing the ranking of the states from fattest to fittest. Mississippi was the fattest and Colorado the fittest. California ranked 41 (on the fit side). Then I found an article on 10 fattest and fittest cities. San Francisco was in the top 10 fittest, but what surprised me was Los Angeles was in the top 10 fattest.

There's your problem, really obese people tend to stay in and sit next to the air-con

It's also been reported recently that people's perceptions of obesity has changed over the past 10 years and most of us now consider a good weight to be a lot higher than we did in the past

You bring up two social stigmas that are placed on modern society today.

1) Fat people need help
2) Fit people don't go to fast food

I find it sad that we're moving in the direction in society where we must label people. It's even sadder to see the fact that our society is moving towards the fact that fast food industries are "evil."

The difference between today and yesterday's society is the fact that people cared more about their personal health rather than their looks. During my father's time of growing up, it was unheard of to go to the gym, and even more so, it was unheard of for men to want six packs abs like they do now. It's even more unheard of to worry about what you're eating. The rules were simple: eat your greens, eat everything on your plate, and drink your milk. With that system in mind at schools, no one worried about obesity, no one had the so-called health problems.

Now we moved to a new world. Where people care so much about how they appear alongside each other. Even more so, we now have "pity" groups where we feel sorry for people of larger size. Even more so, I'll bet many of us do the body comparison with each other when we walk into a room. It's quite common for one to make a comment, "Won't that make you fat?" Even more so, people can no longer eat food they like in front of others instead they must eat "health" food and keep the bad food hidden at home. How many times you go to a restaurant to see a group of girls eating salad? I mean come on. I've seen youthful people picking up a ton of candy bars to share with themselves... but yet one of the comment from another customer is, "You girls are going to get fat eating all that." I mean wow, is that what we've become? No one can enjoy the simple pleasures of life?

Its not as bad as that. ^

If people want to be fat let em, f**k em. Their choice, their problem.

So long as they buy two seats on planes and at the Cinema, I remember being on a coach once where one poor girl didn't have a seat because the woman who booked the seat next to her filled both.

Phoenyx is that you on your avatar and how big your jeans used to be? Wow that IS one big change.

Yep, those are my old jeans. Just remember pants can appear a lot larger when they're folded flat... especially fat pants. I was big, just not THAT big. Still, I'll have a photo taken of me standing in these pants for comparison. (I'm wearing my wedding dress from 15 years ago.)

Was the flight full? If so, did the Customer of Size or the "poor girl" get IDBed (involuntary denied boarding)?

Southwest Airlines now has a Customer of Size policy requiring those who do not fit in one seat with the armrests down to buy two seats, with one being refunded if the flight turns out to be not full.
