Unhealthy Training?? **Don't look here for advice!**

First of all, I'm not advocating anything I'm saying in this thread. I'm merely making a general observation.

Okay, I have really slacked off on my training due to some personal problems I've been having over the last few months. My time in the gym has been sporadic and usually half-assed. I might make it 2-4 times a week with no real routine and I think i've done cardio ONCE in two months. I have pretty much thrown my diet to the wind and pay very little attention to eating clean. Also, my coping mechanism for the last two months has been the bottle; I drink a LOT more now than I ever have since college.

I was going through a wicked plateu prior to this but now the wierd part: I physically LOOK better. My shoulders have bulked up (always a part that I've struggled with). My lats are broader, my abs are more defined, and I haven't gained or lost any weight. I'm baffled; This has been far more than a "shock" to my body, as it's been going on for 2+ months...

Strange indeed.

um, maybe if your crappy diet has been like eating an abundance of chicken breasts. Um, besides alcohol do u do coke or anything like that? one of my friends did coke for bout a month and treated his body like **** and lost a bunch of weight.(maybe explain the false appearance of looking bigger)

Nope, no coke. Mainly beer and some occassional cigarettes. I have 2-3 cups of coffee each morning, but its no more than i used to have when i was conciously being healthy.

Sounds nice. If that was how it worked for me, I would have the body of an Adonis, rather than a hairy fat girl.

it depends what your training was like before, you could have been using a poor routine(catabolic) along with a poor diet(also catabolic),so simply droping back your training and taking in more cals could have seen some growth,.
there are studies that show training 2x a wk can be just as good as training 4x a wk

Have you been looking at yourself in the mirror while drunk? That makes me look like Arnie too ;)

It could be for a few reasons I guess, maybe having other distractions has made your training more effective by stopping you from over thinking. Also, any aggression from the personal problems you've been having could have been taken out on the bar helping you lift more?

I honestly haven't got a clue but thought I'd add some suggestions

Who ever mentioned coke, coke wouldnt make you lose weight unless you was a full time addict.

I sniff on a night out at the weekends, doesnt seem to have any neg effect on me.

How long have you been training anyway? Because if its only been a few months anyway, you'd prob see a difference because your body has never been used to working out (no matter how poor youve been doing it)

Take this as a learning experience.

I might make it 2-4 times a week with no real routine and I think i've done cardio ONCE in two months.

You know that, at this point in time, you respond better to less frequent and lower volume training sessions.

You know that tons of cardio may not be what you need to get the look you want.

I have pretty much thrown my diet to the wind and pay very little attention to eating clean. Also, my coping mechanism for the last two months has been the bottle; I drink a LOT more now than I ever have since college.

You know you were not eating enough to get good results when you were more dialed in with your diet.

You know that there is a likelihood that your body responds well to a higher fat diet. Which is the case for a lot of people I know.

You also now know that alcohol does not have the horrible detrimental effect that people seem to think it does.

If you take a closer look at this you can see what you need to know to get better results in the future.

To be sure, the current plan will not work for an extended amount of time. :D

You must have been under-eating and doing to much work before you fell off the wagon. When you started eating more calories you body was highly motivated to grow.

There are many ways to work a diet to get a response like this. You have just done it by accident. Pretty fortunate for you, take what you have learned and do something with it.

I've been training for over 2 years and have had a pretty good grasp on my training and diet (although I was never perfect).

Thanks for the great response. While I have no intention of continuing things the way I have been, it's good to know that I don't need to beat myself up over ever little calorie and carbohydrate I consume.

My "problems" are resolving themselves (finally!!) so I hope to straighten myself out and move back into a healthier lifestyle, armed with the new bits of knowledge I’ve gained. To think, all this time I’ve been bitching and moaning about poor genetics...:11doh:

That's strange, but ****, if its working, thats great!

I was in a similar situation, except I'd be lying if I said my lifts had gone up. This past quarter at school, I was just so busy with work and hard ass accounting classes, so my training and eating slipped somewhat. I wouldn't hardly do cardio, and would just lift 2 times a week. I still loved lifting, never went up or down on any lifts, which was ok with me. The eating was bad though, pizza, coneys, subs, hell, if I wanted it, I would eat it. But that would mostly be at night, after eating lots of fruits, veggies, protein during the day. I was drinkin like a bastard on the weekends (some weekdays too :D) and didn't gain or lose a pound, even if I got ridiculous some weekends and drank a case and ate a large pizza.

I would never advise anyone to live the way I do, but it was interesting to live in the "maintenence" zone and enjoy it. Not having to keep in a deficit to lose, and not having to eat in a surplus to gain...just eating what I wanted. Granted, my heart probably hates me, liver too, but I've gotten back to 3 lifting days and eating mostly normal. After vacation next week, I'll prolly start upping the cals so I can break 300 with my deadlift. :D

I hear ya MMW, i would never suggest that someone try a "beer and wings diet", but it certainly hasn't hurt my physical appearance and has probably helped it a bit... That doesn't mean my insides aren't hating me. I do struggle with energy a little more than i did before, but that's to be expected.

I have had so many problems over the last few months with friends, girlfriend (now my ex), and family that it became very taxing for me to get to the gym on a set schedule and prepare healthy meals, etc... The upside is: I've learned so much in my years of living healthy that I'm at least aware of what changes need to be made to get back on track.

... and do add more crap to my pile: I got hit on my scooter yesterday!

But i said you wont lose weight unless your a full time addict. You wont lose weight just doing it casually, say at the weekend.
