Few Questions/Introdruction

Hey everyone. I'm 18 years old, 5'11 and about 240 lbs. I plan on dieting this summer and not stopping till its all off. I plan on doing the atkins diet because ive seen how well it works(i was at my max of 256 and did atkins for something like 3 weeks and was down to 228, then which i gave up because im a dumbass) and my doctor said its fine as long as I drink plenty of water. I would really like to be able to take my shirt off without feeling embarrased so i want to lose my stomach and man boobs. I hate working out so i dont plan on including it with my diet but i am willing to do any at home excercises to speed up the process of loosing the fat on my chest. Any excercises or ideas are appreciated, and does anyone know what the iron squeeze method is?

Weezy,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news....but I really don't like your diet plan. I thoroughly admire your intentions and desire to lose weight...but Atkins blows and IMO is not the long-term real solution.

Understand, each gram of glycogen requires 3 grams of water to be sustained on your body. When you drop your carbs, you drop your glycogen storage and the associated 3 grams of water....this is the "water-weight" they refer to when people quickly lose weight in the beginning. That said, let me ask you a question: DO YOU WANT TO LOSE FAT, OR LOSE WEIGHT?

When you cut calories so much, your body will act to become more efficient and look to dump unused lean muscle tissue. By weight-training, you place a toll on those muscles and tell the body you need the muscle and please don't ditch the muscle in order to lean demands out.

I'm sorry...but I'm gonna straight-up tell ya...Atkins dieters look like emaciated wimps, they look like they've been left abandoned on a remote island with little or no food. Sunken chest, scrawny arms, gaunt faces...not good. And when you bite into a carb, the first thing your body does is replenish those glycogen supplies and Atkins dieters are notorious for "re-inflating" when they get away from their diet.

There are no magic pills, no super-diets, no secret solutions for quick results: anything worth having in this world is something you'll likely have to work hard for.

Eat a healthy and well-balanced diet, maintain a 20% calorie deficit
Get in your cardio 3-5 times per week
WEIGHT TRAIN....it'll build muscle, stimulate metabolism and burn calories

Your young, it won't take much to get your body to respond and get where you wanna be. And lastly: if I could go back in time and tell myself ANYTHING....it would be to get in shape and enjoy my younger years looking & feeling good about myself. That and buy microsoft. :D

Would doing various at-home excercises like pushups and dumbells help me lose actual fat with atkins?

Weezy....did you read anything I wrote?

Doing exercise burns calories and helps build muscles....seriously; what kind of question are you asking here?

If you are looking to temporarily lose some water, fat, and muscle - then yes, proceed with Atkins. If you desire to be, not only smaller, but healthy and fit in the long run - then look into eating more balanced and exercising.

There are no exercises that will help you to specifically lose fat in any particular place (i.e. spot training). More bad news, I know.

Read up on stuff, educate yourself as much as possible, and be determined. Just don't be determined to do the wrong things.

I have a problem with several of the points you have made.
1.) you dont want to work out
because you are probably about 60/70lbs overweight you could start by just dieting and lose half of it but losing weight is all about a calorie defecit so eventually you will have to keep cutting more and more calories which will leave you being a skinnyfat person which trust me you dont want. with excercise you would be cutting less calories which could give you the results you want. I can almost garauntee you that if you try it diet alone you will never reach your goal
2.) Im not a big fan of the atkins diet, because you do actually need carbs, if you would cut out all the refined sugar and carbs from your diet and stick with whole grain you would be fine. THe aktins diet is much more short term goal oriented, and your looking for a long term change. The atkins diet will eventually lead to muscle loss because of its structure on top of that.
3.) if you want excercises at home thats fine though, to be most effective youll probably want a pair of dumbells/resistant bands and since your a beginner thats about all you need.
heres some ex of what you could do at home, jump squats/lunges for legs, pushups for arms, planks/crunches for core, and cardio if you have stairs just walk up and down for 30-40min once you get better you can go faster (trust me its harder than it seems)

if I was the OP I wouldn't be concerned with losing muscle because I bet he has next to none. I think a low carb diet is the quickest way to lose a bucketload of fat, and he's got a lot to lose.

Yes im not too worried about losing muscle, my main objective is to just lose the gurth around my stomach and chest. I believe atkins and various easy workouts can get my weight dropped and have a semi-decent figure. Once i get back in school maybe ill consider seriously working out 3-5 times a week to actually try and get in shape.

Although BikeSwimLaugh, a senior member and authority here, gave you advice on this issue (which you seem to know nothing about), you still 'believe atkins and various easy workouts' can make you lose weight.

What is this belief based on? I hope it's based on more than those infomercials running at 3am for pills you can buy that'll make you lose "40 or more pounds or your money back!"

YOU CAME HERE FOR ADVICE, SO DO NOT BE STUBBORN

If losing weight was as easy as no carbs and easy workouts, why is obesity considered an epidemic now? Why is America known as the 'fat country'? Probably because it's NOT that easy to lose weight.

I nearly laughed when you said you thought you could get a semi-decent figure through 'easy' workouts. You actually used the word easy!
There's no other way to get rid of that fat except to push yourself each and every day to your limits - both mentally and physically.

Long story short, there is no easy way to lose weight. It wasn't that easy to put it on (just think of all those nights you had to spend eating a bag of chips in front of the tv!) and it certainly won't be easy to get it off. If you're going to be stubborn about it and not listen to any advice given here to you, then I wish you luck with your own home made plan, based entirely on your 'beliefs'. You'll lose 5-10lbs and say to yourself "Ha! I showed those guys on the internet who's boss!", and then you'll gain the weight back because you don't know how to eat properly or how to push yourself when you exercise.

If you don't understand what it is you need to do to lose weight, you'll be lugging around that belly until the day you die (which will be 20 years prematurely).

Read the stickies at the beginning of the forum and ask as many questions as you want. Everyone is here to help. But when you get advice from someone who knows what they're talking about, it might be best to shutup and listen regardless of what YOU think will work.
