Shoulder pain when lifting

I think I'm having a recurrence of an old shoulder injury. The pain I'm feeling feels like when I had shoulder impingement. It occurs mostly during overhead lifts, such as shoulder presses and overhead triceps exercises. Do you have any suggestions as to how to relieve this pain--through some kind of stretching exercises or something else? Will I need to abandon these types of exercises altogether?

first of all, stop everything that hurts. second, go see a professional.

This happened to me after I tried to one rep max my military press.
It probably occured because you used too much weight, or incorrect form.
There was a slight pain for the next 2-3 upper body sessions, but it has gone away now.

If it doesn't go away or if it gets worse you might have ****ed something up, go see a doctor

Hmm, sounds a lot like a rotator cuff injury.. When I get this, about once / year, I lay off the overhead exercises, take an anti-inflammatory like Advil and ice it down. Generally, the inflammation goes away after a month or two. To reduce, but not prevent, reocccurence, try stretching exercises:

shoulder

Good Info........This is what I needed! I too was doing overhead pull over (lay-down) with d.bell.........form went wide on the left & felt as if it was dislocating! Backed off on shoulder routines for short time, now it pops a lot more than before. Bursitis in both. Actually was able to get off ibuprofen when starting omega-3 regiment until this happened. Will give the rotator cuff exercise a try.
Later......

Stay off the Ibuprofen or any other NSAIDS if you have joint problems. It will relieve the soreness, but is actually bad for your joints as extended use can degrade your cartilage.

Hum, Thanks for the tip. Looks like I got some research to do. Wish I would have known this 10-20 years ago! I would usually alternate between IBY & Acetaminophen. Had actually done away with all around 8 weeks ago. Seems worse on my push ups than the press. Oh well, may have to go back to lighter weight & more reps......
Think I would benefit more from glucosamine with the O-3?

There is no free lunch with medications, even over the counter meds. While NSAIDS do relieve inflammation, e.g., from bursitis, they have side effects like all other drugs. But, I am not aware of any joint issue side effects.

NSAIDs can cause a number of side effects, some of which may be very serious. The most common side effects are stomach pain or cramps, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, diarrhea, heartburn, headache, dizziness or lightheadedness, and drowsiness. The most serious side effects are gastrointestinal ulcers, internal bleeding, kidney failure, liver failure. These side effects are more likely when the NSAID drugs are taken in large doses or for a long time. Some NSAIDs have even been implicated in the worsening of osteoarthritis.

NSAIDs Affect Cartilage Production
This is the most important part of the story. Research reveals that there is another little known side-effect that NSAIDs have on cartilage, which may promote the progression of osteoarthritis.

Studies have shown that over-the-counter and prescription NSAIDs can lead to the degeneration of joint cartilage! In fact several NSAIDs inhibit chondrocyte (cartilage cells) production and accelerate degeneration of joint cartilage!(5)

Well, I didn't intend on starting a pain reliever debate. However I am 46, Very active lifestyle. That little thing called......working for a living for one and too numerous to go on. Through the years I have had some injuries. I am pokin' around on this key board with A finger, steel plate & screws.
Anyway, I am reminded of a DR. visit a couple of years ago........Right shoulder pain & tennis elbow. Prior to the cortisone needle asked what (if any) pain relief was available that wouldn't have side effects on stomach, liver or heart? (Viox/Cox-2) The answer I got was anything with Glucosamine.
Well I am a big wussy when it comes to taking pills :bncry:.......I mean come on now.......have you seen the size of them burgers! Will be looking for liquid form.
As for the ibuprofen.........short term/yes.......long term/NO

Thanks. Those are exactly what I used when I had my shoulder surgery several years ago, and I had forgotten about those exercises.

Is aspirin a NSAID? How do you feel about aspirin as an anti-inflammatory? I know it's harsh on the stomach.
