questions about jogging

Hi! I've got some questions about jogging. I want to know how quickly my body will shape if I jog on a regular basis?

Also, how often should I jog? And will jogging shape my whole body or just my lower body?

this morning I weighed 102 (sounds skinny but it's not because I'm only 5'3) I really want to know if jogging will work quickly to help me lose 7 pounds in 9 days.

If anyone wants to offer me some advice that would be awesome!

Jogging will burn calories, and will train your muscles for jogging.

To the extent that the calorie burn reduces body fat, the body fat will shrink in places determined by genetics -- you cannot realistically spot-reduce by choosing one exercise over another (although different exercises could affect muscle development differently).

102 pounds at 5'3" is a body mass index (BMI) of 18.1 ("healthy" is usually given as 19 to 25). This is already in the "underweight" range. Dropping to 95 pounds would reduce your BMI to 16.8.

Now, BMI says nothing about your body fat percentage (which is why BMI is not a particularly good indicator of health for an individual by itself -- lean athletes could have BMIs in the "overweight" range, while "skinny fat" people could have BMIs in the "healthy" range but still have too much body fat). Have you had body fat percentage measured?

If your body fat percentage is too high, then you may want to consider remedying it by gaining lean muscle instead of losing fat, since a too high body fat percentage at your low weight probably indicates that you have so little muscle that you are at risk of being affected functionally (i.e. too weak to do normal tasks in daily life).

To lose fat you have to lose calories.

And ( in theory at least ) to lose 1 pound of fat you have to lose 3,500 calories. If you want to lose 7 pounds, in theory, you have to lose a total of 24,500 calories ( 7 x 3,500 ) .

Jogging burns calories. I'm only guessing mind you, but let's say for argument's sake that at your weight you might burn 400 calories by jogging for 1 hour a day.

So, if you simply ' jogged ' 1 hour a day, 7 days a week, in theory ( all other things being equal ) it would take you 61 days to lose 7 lbs ( 24,500 / 400 = 61 ) Conversely, in theory again, if you want to lose 7 lbs in 9 days, you'd have to lose about 2,700 calories a day ( 24,500 / 9 = 2,722 ). In theory, that would mean you'd have to jog for about 6.5+ hours a day ( all other things being equal ) to lose lose 7 pounds in 9 days.

The examples I gave you a very generalized and theoretical, but the point is, if you're only going to use jogging as a means of losing fat, it might be more reasonable to expect to lose 1 +/- lbs. a week that way as opposed to 7 pounds in 9 days.

Smells like High School reunion.....

It's just not practical to lose 7 pounds of fat in just 9 days. Go light on the calories, get some exercise and wear something that helps you look thinner. :D

Don't forget, doing alot of intense exercise will also build some muscle, and added muscle means added weight.

uhhhh yeah, I'm 22 years old. I don't have a high school reunion for quite a while, not to mention, I will never go to that. That's lame. I want to be more thin simply because to me, nothing tastes as good as thin feels.

I appreciate you guys answering my thread but i've figured out a way to lose the weight. In fact I'm not 102 lbs anymore, I'm already at 98 lbs. I basically lose a pound a day according to my scale. And I don't even exercise often. When I did visit my gym last week they put something on my arm and my body fat is only 11%!

anyway jogging isn't what I needed to lose weight after all, fasting is. and losing 7 lbs in 9 days is very realistic as I'm already losing a pound a day.

Again thanks for your answers I appreciate it, but I found my solution!

Not to piss on your parade, but you do realize your "solution" isn't actually going to work, right? As soon as you start eating normally and stop fasting, you will likely put on the weight again. Odds are, you are just shedding water weight, since you aren't eating much and holding any glycogen/water, or much food in general. I'd find a better way, such as what has been advised.

OMG, you need to develop an infomercial and get on it asap!:jump1:

"A pound a day, and we couldn't say it on TV if it weren't true!" :D

Hey, I was joking about the reunion....but you have to admit, many people faced with a reunion are looking (as you were) to lose a specific amount of weight in a particular amount of time.

Anyways, you can lose 7 pounds of weight in 9 days, but you can't lose 7 pounds of fat in that time span. Wrangell explained why.

But hey, you seem happy and are getting results, so you go girl!!!

If you are female, 11% body fat is down at the essential fat level; going below that is more likely to be unhealthy.

I want to be more thin simply because to me, nothing tastes as good as thin feels.

You are already below normal weight range, with a low body fat percentage (down to essential fat if you are female); why do you want to be any thinner? Extreme thinness is a risk factor for osteoporosis in the future. Fasting is likely to result in deficiencies of nutrients (as well as calories) with various other health problems.

Anorexia?

"But hey, you seem happy and are getting results, so you go girl!!!"

What an irresponsible thing to say.

"People are wierd." How ironic. (It's "weird" by the way.)

Smells like a troll vying for anything to criticize & comment on. First post on the forum and pulled from a thread that's over a year old. Ta Ta indeed.....
