Canned Tuna...the holy grail of snacks?

Is it safe/good to eat a can of tuna everyday as a snack? I just found some yesterday in my basement storage room and its 78g, somewhat small, and at 130 calories, its a whopping 18 g of protein, and aside from that they come in different flavours too.!

any insight?

The standard is two servings a week, fewer if you're breastfeeding or pregnant.

I have anywhere from 1-2cans of Chunk Lite Tuna A DAY, I have not had any "mercury" problems so far. Yes, it is a great protein snack, mine is around 160 cals for with 34g of protein.

FYI......

" Women of childbearing age who aren't pregnant: Mercury can linger in the body after you stop eating fish. So we advise these women to eat no more than about three chunk-light cans per week, or one can of solid-light or white-tuna "

........it's comforting to know that having 7 - 14 cans of chunk-light tuna a week isn't an issue for men.

I don't really care about the statistics either way, they are highly exaggerated. I will continue to have my 1-2 cans of tuna a day. As for the amount of sodium, i have been exceeding the amount of sodium advised by the food industry by far, somedays even going more than double on the amount of sodium i am intaking, but because I exercise and take in plenty of water for my body, my blood pressure and everything else has checked out fine.

I have ate tuna throughout my adult life, and probably tripled it the last two years. Stats this, stats that. Then then they come up with stats that contradict the former this and that. LOL. I dont care about stats either. For YEARS, they said eggs were bad over a certain amount. OH! NO! Now there not so bad.

Believe me, I am healthy. Love Tuna, and will eat the crap load out of it.

This should answer your questions:

Freddie Mercury (born Farrokh Bomi Bulsara; 5 September 1946 – 24 November 1991) was a British musician, best known as the lead singer of the rock band Queen (inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001). He is noted for his vocal abilities and for his live performances. As a songwriter, he composed many international hits, including "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Killer Queen", "Somebody to Love", "We Are the Champions" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". In addition to his work with Queen, he also produced several hits as a solo artist. Mercury, who was of Indian Parsi descent and who grew up in India, has been referred to as "Britain's first Asian rock star.

Although Queen were not always popular with rock music critics, estimates of the band's worldwide record sales to date have been placed as high as 300 million. The band have also spent more collective weeks on the UK Album Charts than any other musical act, including The Beatles. In 2006, Time Asia named Mercury as one of the most influential Asian heroes of the past 60 years.

Curious - why do you think the stats ( i.e supporting recommendations regarding consumption by women [ of childbearing age who aren't pregnant ] ) are " highly exaggerated " ?

i guess ill have to find a balance between that and more eggwhites and some other kinds of fish then :)

sushi must be such a healthy meal then.. uncooked fish with most of its nutrients still intact.

Tuna seems to fill me up really fast. Only thing I have against it is carrying around tins and a tin opener all day.

That is an ignoramuses approach to life. If your wife is pregnant you would not expect her to have the same attitude would you? Mercury and the unborn child is not a healthy combo. The old adage of eating things in moderation holds true certainly for vulnerable groups. You would be surprised at the number of women who drink and smoke whilst pregnant - let alone consider how much tuna they are eating.

Look into the food chain and how tuna ends up with higher toxicity levels.

I don't see anyone who is pregnant and eating tuna here, do you?

It is ignorant to post a comment in response to my post, and taylor it to mean that it was exhaustive thought process in my approach to life. An unexamined narrow mind is a mind not worth having. Open the mind and in time your thoughts will be sublime.

As someone who loves tuna, has been pregnant, and has a healthy, smart, physically and mentally strong child - I ate tuna when I was pregnant.

Did I stick to the type and amount guidelines my midwife gave me?

Of course. But did it destroy my child and explode my uterus? No.

First of all, kudos for having a midwife. We also had mid-wives for the pregnancy and births for each of my 4 kids. They're amazing IMO. :)

Curious. What tuna guidelines - if any - did your midwife have ?

And ( somewhat off-topic ) what guidelines did your midwife have regarding alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

I could care less about Mercury in Tuna, but Wrangell, drinking alcohol during pregnancy is the worst thing you can do (As I learned in my psychology class). So all in all, do not let a drop of alcohol into your system when pregnant.

What do you guys have with your tuna to mix it up alittle sometimes?

I think salad cream is abit high in calories, maybe abit of olive oil or something? I haven't tried much variation really.

I like eating tuna with sweet veggies (e.g., bell pepper). I also have mustard or honey-mustard with my tuna. That seems like a decent flavoring with adding the calories of dressing or mayo. Sometimes, I'll have the tuna with lowfat cheese melted on it too.

Note - I eat tuna with very low sodium, though, so I'm looking to put in a little bit of stronger or 'salty' type flavoring.

I eat tuna raw right out of the can. takes 30 seconds.
