How much for weighted sit ups?

Well, I always do 3 sets of 10-12 reps. I started around 20 lbs, but I hurt my back. I did some planks and stuff for a month or so, then came back to it. Ever since I've just been laying on the weights whenever I can do more. Right now I'm at 55 lbs.

My progress overall is pretty good, I never have back pain any more, but I still have little definition. I'm not talking about visible definition, that's just a matter of cutting untill you see some ridges, but when I flex and feel around the last couple of months they've been about the same - a little larger than my lowest rib. My weight is still increasing, I go about 5 lbs every other month.

Any idea what weight I should be at for half decent abdominals?

I do weighted sit ups once a week, and planks once a week as well. I try to switch up my workouts so my body doesn't get used to anything.

Situps are great, so are planks but explore other abdominal activities as well. Consider leg-lifting activities, and also torso-rotational activities.

A good weight is whatever you feel comfortable working with. I personally avoid weighted situp work though.

Decent abs don't come from crunches, they come from low body fat (around 10% for them to start to show). The low body fat comes from a good workout coupled with a very good diet.

No, I'm aware of that. But not everyone has a six pack underneath a layer of fat. I literally started with nothing. I had basically no abdominal muscles what so ever. It really was a strange expirience getting a new muscle, lol.

I understand where you're coming from. While direct ab work is beneficial, you'll also develop the muscles of your core by implementing the proper routine. Pushups, pullups, bench, deadlifts, squats, lunges, etc., are all important components to core development.

I like the upper/lower split routines. So on my leg days I'll include an exercise or two directly for my abs.

Search online for ab exercises, and try to incorporate them throughout your workout week. Weighted crunches are fine, but there are many many other activities that are as good, some even better.

Yeah I do push-ups, bent over rows, and dumb bell punches, (along with a few others) which I guess doesn't hurt. I can feel tention in my core when I do those.

For my legs I do stair climbing. To make it as much of a workout as I can, I do 3 stairs at a time, and I typically go up 16 flights each time, about 3-4 days a week. I also feel core tention doing that as well.

I've tried doing squats and deadlifts, but for some reason my knees start to hurt after the 2nd set, so I don't bother with those in fear of knee damage.

Yeah I tried doing half squats and dead lifts, but my knees still kill me when I do it. It's kind of strnage, because that's the only time when my knees ever hurt.
