Alligatorob's Diary

Interesting way to look st it LaMa . I watched a clip the other day and the amount of young people who did not know where pearl harbour was and who bombed it was scary.
Rob congrats on your new low weight . You are doing great

It was a good day, I ate well, exercised, and feel good tonight. My exercise was just physical therapy things, but I finally did everything on my list twice, took 80 minutes total.
I feel like I should thank the Japanese for that, awful as it must've been for the people on Hawaii. No knowing how long the war would've lasted otherwise, and even if it had ended with Hitler losing the Russians would likely not have left Austria in 1955. Or ever. Of course JFK wouldn't have entered politics without the war either; wonder what would've become of him.
Agree with Petal that is an interesting perspective; I suspect that even without Pearl Harbor the US would have somehow gotten into the war, but maybe too late to keep the Russians from taking more of Europe. I read that yesterday that in the US more people died of Covid, in just one day, than died at Pearl Harbor More Americans could die of COVID today than were killed at Pearl Harbor
Rob congrats on your new low weight . You are doing great
Thanks, but it did not last, was back up to 158 this morning that's 7 lbs up in just a couple of days. I suppose I am adjusting to seeing my weight swing up and down almost 10 lbs. So long as the average is good I guess I am good. I agree on the number of young people who don't know about Pearl Harbor or recent history, kind of scary...

Yesterday I watched a video by Greg Doucette - supershredded dude with a very weird Youtube persona - and he mentioned he fluctuated by more than 10 pounds (I want to say 14, but don't quote me) in a month. I can see the changes being hard to watch sometimes but maybe knowing that a guy who's been watching his food and exercise for a living for years deals with the same thing helps.

my daily weight window is about 7 lbs.... 165 - 172, but i seem to see 168 more than any other reading. if i had to guess before i stepped on the scale, i'd probably only be right ~30% of the time. how i feel in relation to how much i weigh never seems to be an accurate indication.

Another one I missed posting, here it is a day late!

Today was a good day, I ate well, exercised and feel good tonight. Did 2 hours and 12 minutes in the gym and did not feel too tired at the end. I only did one set of my PT exercises, normally I do two, but the gym kind of makes up for that, I think.

Thanks Flyer and LaMa, guess my weight swings are not so unusual. Actually if I compare my afternoon/evening highs to my morning lows the swing is more than 10 lbs. I only post my morning weight here, evenings are always higher. Some days it amazes me how much my weight can drop overnight, some

Today was also a good day, I ate well, exercised and feel good tonight. Did 2 hours and 22 minutes in the gym and felt pretty good about it, with my PT exercises that was over 3 hours. I think I am getting back to where I was fitnesswise anyway before the surgery. Still not lifting as heavy in the arm/shoulder exercises because of my shoulder, but doing pretty well.

Sounds great to me. I will admit that I haven't checked your food/exercise reports as often since you've started posting them as downloadable attachments but it seems like you're back in your groove.

Today was a good day, ate well, exercised (PT only) and feel good tonight. I have decided to let my calories rise a little, but am going to shoot to stay under 1,700. I am not gaining weight so I think it will work, if not I will cut back. I have been trying to better weigh and measure food to better track calories as well. Today I had a couple of small sweet things, first time in over a year, a small aussie treat and a little caramel corn. The aussie treat is a small cookie kind of thing, but made with healthy ingredients, not sure it has anything to do with Australia.

Not quite sure what the "groove" is or should be, but I think I am doing ok. Are the pdf reports harder to read? They are easier to post.
Keep up the good work Rob and a little wave from Ireland
Thanks Ireland and greetings back to you.

I have to download, then open them, which takes that little bit longer when I'm on my phone. You do what works for you; if there's anything special in them you mention it anyway. Great that you're raising your calories again!

I have to download them & save them into a folder before I open them too, so I only do from time to time.
I’m glad you have upped your calories, Rob :)

Congratulations on raising calories - I think it makes sense especially given that you are basically back to pre-surgery exercise levels. Will the cold & snow slow that down?

Didn't know that, for now I may stick with the pdfs, they are much easier to do, and if I need to I will mention it here in the text of my posts.

Only a little, doing what LaMa calls reverse dieting I guess. So far so good, I will do it slowly and if I start to gain weight I will cut again.

I probably am not quite up to pre-surgery exercise and may not get there. I am close and pretty comfortable doing what I am doing. Most of my exercise is indoors now so the weather won't have a lot of impact. I am spending a lot of my exercise time doing the Physical Therapy exercises, and related. Not as aerobic but good for my shoulder and reasonable exercise.

Oh, sorry, I am behind on your journal. What surgery did you get and are you mostly healed up now? So nice you can up your calories for the winter!

Can I ask you about living in Louisiana? Are there artsy, safe towns you could recommend as far as retiring there? My husband and I are looking to get out of California in the next few years as house insurance and cost of living are astronomical, and I was mainly looking in North and South Carolina, but I visited New Orleans once and it was wondrous.

Are you all set for Christmas?
No, of course not, but probably in better shape than most years. Still have a few folks to buy for, took the grandkids on a big shopping trip tonight, we get them out and give them budgets to buy for people, it was fun.

Hey Marisa, good to see you here! I had prostate surgery in October, not the worst case by any means, but it did set me back a bit.

Louisiana is like a lot of places, if you get to know it there are nice places to live and safe. New Orleans however can be tough... One place I have always liked that would be a lot safer and slower paced is Natchitoches (Official Natchitoches Travel Information), my mother's home town. It is actually older than New Orleans and pretty well preserved, with a lively art scene, kind of like a small town New Orleans. It is also much further from the hurricane risks. Don't mean to dissuade you from New Orleans, a lot of people really love it there. I have a cousin in Algiers (Algiers | New Orleans), the only part of the City of New Orleans on the west bank of the river. If I were moving to NOLA that would be one of the first places I would look, safer and quieter than most of the city, but not far from the happenings, just a short ferry ride away from the French Quarter (Ferries in New Orleans). Louisiana is much lower cost than California, but be sure you understand the flood risks and flood insurance before you buy.

Having lived in Florida much of my life I am very familiar with people moving in from the north to retire. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, my advice is to try a place first, rent for 6 months or so and see how you like it.

Wow, thanks so much Rob! Natchitoches looks really historic and lovely. We plan to buy a commercial van and fix it up as a camper van and travel around looking for potential places to live, and will definitely visit Natchitoches. New Orleans would be wonderful to live near, but I would never live in a big city again. We are really spoiled living in the countryside, and would probably pick a small town near New Orleans and then maybe park in Algiers and take the ferry or something like that (if we did plan to live there). Algiers looks gorgeous though, and I peeked at the houses for sale there, and they are really amazing. Definitely a wonderful place to sketch!

I've been researching the southeast coast, so have been putting addresses into an elevation-finder and making sure there are places at least 25' above sea level in the towns I am looking at, since I would like my grandkids to be able to inherit a house instead of just a roof. I read some good articles on flood insurance and real estate, too. Having just lived through a month or so of forest fires looming very near us in CA, I am very leery of natural disasters now! That's actually why our house insurance nearly doubled. Anyway, thanks so much for sharing - I'm excited to visit and check out both places!

A good day , you ate well and exercised and brought the kids shopping . Win win all around . Your a great granddad .

You are a really thoughtful grandpa, Rob. How did they go with their shopping?
