In it for life

I am a little late to the party but welcome to the forums. :seeya:

I can tell you from experience and I'm sure you know as well. It is so much easier when the people you love and live with are on a similar path. This time both my hubby and youngest son have join MFP to log their meals and they both lost 25 pounds each. It makes it less stressful on me because we are now eating alike, whereas before I wanted all the junk they were eating.

Just wanted to stop by and say Hi and hope your journey is nothing but successful!

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Such a lovely bunch! Note to self: find time to read other people's diaries. :)

After writing here about my reluctance to work out after work yesterday, it was not possible to procrastinate. 30 minutes of elliptical done! And you helped!

I use a 5K running app for my elliptical workouts because it was boring to drudge on that machine looking at the clock. Now a voice in my earphones tells me when to go faster and when to slow down and I haven't stepped off early since.

In the spirit of making workouts more interesting, I've collected a bunch of gadgets over the years. Love for technology runs in the family but it must be funny to watch me get ready for my short workout like I'm going to war. Attach the heart rate monitor strap, switch on the watch, climb onto the elliptical, and then frantically try to switch Garmin Forerunner, Sony Smartband, 5K app and the elliptical on at the same time, only to realize I forgot Spotify.

Afterwards there's data to analyze. My recovery rate when alternating between "running" and "walking" is quite good but usually my pulse gets to 190 toward the end of the workout. Yesterday's results showed improvement already, max hr 179 :)

What's your favourite workout? I've heard people say it's easier for them to run than to walk. For me it's very easy to walk (even when heart rate is a gazillion) but a real pain to ride a bike (and by pain I mean nearly seeing black and dry-heaving - but that's probably too much information :D). And it's my firm belief that you shouldn't run if you're quite heavy or if you haven't been shown the correct technique or if you don't have good shoes when running on pavement.

Such a lovely bunch!

Yeah, we are pretty lovely :p

I've recently started working out at home doing Fitness Blender videos on YouTube, you might want to check them out to avoid boredom and to mix things up a bit. I've fallen in love with the guys behind it and really enjoying the exercises (most of the time anyway :p ). I never used to work out at home but now do pretty much every day.

Haha, yeah I'm all gadgeted up when I go running. Forerunner + Nike app on my phone :D bloody technology ;) (I do love it really)

Couch to 5k is a good way to get into running, if you're interested and you're so right about getting the right shoes. They make such a difference when you're actually running and obviously help to prevent injuries. I got mine in a running shop (with the guys getting me on a treadmill and filming my feet and all :D) and wouldn't do it any other way.

And you helped!
I'm glad we did. The forum is the best it has been since I joined 9 years ago. There are so many lovely people here- so supportive, funny, friendly & interesting. You'll find your way around the other diaries when you get the chance. There's no pressure.
You made me laugh picturing you attaching all your gadgets :)

Girl, you are on top of your game with cool workout gadgets...I've been dying to get a Polar FT but to be honest with you, I am simply AWFUL with technology...other than tracking my calories, I would have a hard time interpreting data from the heart-rate monitor.

Favorite work-outs: Hiking, Dancing, and Cyclelates (mix of Pilates/Spinning with weights), Power Pilates, Abs-on board classes. Unfortunately, when I am working overseas I don't get to do it as often...but back in California, these are my favorite. ;-)

You are doing so well, keep up the good work darling!!

Finally some free time! It has been such a busy week and the diary business has not become a habit yet so sadly it got neglected. I spent the weekend with my parents being moderately active around the garden and put in lots of hours in the office plus some work related travel.

Exercising is also one of the things that gets neglected real quick in my case. It's said it takes 21 days to form a habit but I'd like to kick out a few habits to make room for new ones first. Not working full-time for a living would really help with forming the exercising habit ;)

I did go diving one evening, a start of the season dive. It was unseasonably warm outside but we geared up expecting low water temperatures. So I consider that experience a good work-out - I've never worn so much neoprene all at once and man was that difficult to get on! - but not really a proper dive as I wasn't comfortable physically or mentally. But it looks like it's going to be a busy diving summer, already going back for 2 more dives on Sunday, so mind and body will be exercised thoroughly.

We are doing well food-wise. I had mom's pancake during the visit but it caused no further cravings and it's probably good to shock the system once a month or so. System was sufficiently shocked :D

Official measuring day is tomorrow. My weight is persistently still but hopefully there are some changes in the cm's. It's the first month when we know his starting weight from last month so his results will definitely be motivating!

Happy weekend everyone!

Results time!

My weight has only gone down 0,6 kg last month - blaming the hormone treatment I have to go through. Total loss of 5 months still an even 10 kg. But, as hoped, measurements have decreased well, even if I did weasel out of exercising a lot. Maybe I actually managed to build some muscle.

  • Waist (the slimmest part of the abdomen) -2,5 cm (total 6,5)
  • Tummy (above hipbone) -1,5 cm (total 8,5)
  • Butt -2,5 cm (total 7,0)
  • Thigh -1,5 cm (total 10,5)
Yay me!

His weight loss of the month was 4,2 kg which is exactly the pace we are going for. Total loss estimated at 15 kg.
  • Waist -4 cm (total 10)
  • Tummy 0 cm (total 11)
  • Butt -6 cm (total 9)
  • Thigh -1 cm (total 9)
The healthy belly measurements should be below 90 cm for me and 100 cm for him. I have 14 cm to go, he has 49. But we started at 160 cm with him - good progress!

Measuring will always have some errors - you can never position the tape exactly as you did the last time. I've heard some go for the more scientific approach of taking several measurements and recording the average. Chill, guys, let's keep the obsession level healthy :)

How is it that after only going from 83,5 to 82,9 kg during a whole month, the day after the official recording day it drops to 82,2 kg. And I didn't do anything differently! Someone's idea of a joke..

Nice diving today, even with the rain and the wind. Water was 20 degrees on the surface but only 13 at 7m. Shivering on the boat also burns calories, right? :D

:D Congratulations on the extra 0.7 kg lost! Who cares about body-logic, as long as it goes down ;) Mariah Carey used to swear by sucking ice cubes in order to lose weight but... well...

Well done to the 2 of you for losing cms over the month. It is excellent that you are doing this together. You may have been retaining some fluid on weigh-in day. You are doing well Bri2nne! :)

LaMaria and Cate - excellent explanations! :)

The extra loss seems to be correct so hopefully it will take less than 2 months to reach 70's.

Another shiver+dive evening yesterday but so much joy! Happiness is the only thing worth pursuing and my wetsuit does hug my curves rather nicely. :D

I've decided to take it easy with daily exercise. Summer season came and smacked me in the head - there are concerts, outdoor plays, weddings and birthday parties to attend. The calendar is full for months. This means there's less time to lie around on the couch and we can't overeat because party food rarely includes things we can eat. It's fine to let loose a bit - just walk a bit more and not beat yourself up over the occasion piece of chocolate covered banana (homemade) at a relative's birthday party.

Wishing you happiness!

Being sensible about festivities can save SO many calories! Just be aware of what you eat and why, then I'm sure you can do it.

Can't say we've been exceptionally sensible lately but the upside is that with so much going on, there's no time to obsess over eating. When home, we eat low-carb regularly and well but when running around, food doesn't even enter my mind.

For example, this weekend we had 2 big parties to go to. We had some omelette both mornings (10 am) and had time for food only about 6 pm. Sensible choices were made, and some less sensible. Hunger did not make us stuff ourselves with everything but if a fancy dinner is served by waiters in white gloves, you can't skip those potatoes when there's not much on the plate :D So overall the quantities have been small and my body is appreciating the occasional fasting - I feel light and energetic and will see the number 7 on the scale quite soon.

Comfortable routine will come back as soon as summer is over - better enjoy this mayhem while it lasts :)

I just re-read your 1st page. I love this-
Self-motivation corner: Why we're going to succeed

- We have lived for nearly 5 months without potatoes, rice, bread, sweets and soda. That basically means we can achieve anything. ;)
- We didn't drink much alcohol to begin with but it has become even rarer now. Less empty calories! (Downside is that we don't get invited to parties much nowadays but that might be the result of the general lifestyle change and.. well.. age.)
- We are both quite homey so there's less temptation to grab an unhealthy bite on the street. Routine helps a lot.
- We try not to obsess over the kg number - there's no point in weighing oneself every day, I try to limit us to twice a week max. He even seems quite uninterested in knowing the number.
- We have kept track of body measurements once a month and I've pinned the graphs showing best results to the fridge.
- I'm religious about drinking water and have added a glass in the morning first thing to jump-start my digestion. He doesn't run away screaming from regular water anymore :)
- We don't have unrealistic expectations about weight-loss. We're OK if results don't come fast and I've personally never wanted to be thin - strong and curvy is preferred.
- This isn't a temporary diet. When we reach healthy BMI, there can be no going back to the old ways. I think we are willing to accept that (while cursing the unfairness whenever we see thin people stuff themselves with pizza).
- We have each other.
You have a great attitude & are so happy that it is contagious :D

Mayhem has ruled for a month - but oh, such happy times! If we get to spend some time at home, it's only to catch up on sleep, other times we're on the road, active and frolicky ;)

I've always gained weight during summer, because it's such a short one here and everyone lets loose. This year we made a pact that unless we are on an adventure far from home, diet is constant (with more sweet fresh berries than in wintertime), but on longer trips, there can be some cheating (and alcohol). So last week there might have been some pancakes consumed with a bit of ice cream and some freshly baked bread in a lovely Italian restaurant. But we were 300 km plus a ferry ride away and we can't just pack up and leave all the time as I'm working all through this summer. Absolutely no scruples!

Last week I saw my long-awaited 79 on the scales, but that was before the pancake and bread :D Only exercise I've managed to fit in my day has been the weekly diving, but now is definitely the time to start with some core strength exercises. Otherwise my back will give out on my diving trip in the fall and there's no way I can hoist myself into a RIB-boat with no upper body strength. So planks and dumbbells it is.

Hope everyone is well and enjoying life while working towards their goals!
