Squat headaches

I've started doing squats this week and everytime I do it I start feeling some pain in my head... kinda like something pounding on it. I have a feeling its got something to do with the barbell resting on my traps because it only happens when I do squats. From there on, the pain sticks till around an hour after I workout. Am I doing something wrong here? Any ideas? Would doing front squats be better for me?

Check your form with the sticky at the top of this weight lifting forum and see if that might be the problem.

Just a question, how many times has this occurred?

The pain you describe can occur if your body is somewhat dehydrated, or if you've been sitting still for a long while and then you just start to do exercise (like squats, etc).

Actually, there are literally a million reasons why one's head would hurt, so don't jump to conclusions too quickly.

Whats the weight on the barbell? When it's resting on your traps, do you feel as though it cuts blood circulation to your head via the neck?

Make sure you're breathing throughout the movement. We all have a tendency to hold our breaths at the stage where we begin to push up from parallel. You should be breathing out at this stage.

I'd try some front squats to see if you get the same result - just make sure you're doing them with the same intensity. If you still get a headache, you can rule out the trap issue.

It could be blocked sinuses. I have that problem occasionally when lifting weights - get a sudden headache from the lifting - there are things to stop it, such as Sudafed (may only be in England) and other pain-killing things for blocked sinuses. Not sure if it is, but could be :). Good luck with the pain.

Ok so today I did deadlifts and I started getting a headache again, although to a lesser degree than what I got whe I did squats. I guess that rules out the traps problem. This only happens whenever I do those 2 exercises. You may notice that they both happen with BBs, but I feel fine when I do bench presses (although I used to smith bench).

If it helps, I do 60 lbs for both squats and deadlifts, I do 2 x 15 for both, and I'm 5'10" and about 150 lbs.

That may not be a weight lifting issue, go see a doctor. Why take a chance on something like that. They may have the answers that a trainers won't.
