New to the gym and dont know where to start, can you help?

Hello everyone. I am a 29m 6ft and about 260 ( yeah over wieght )

I just joined a gym in my area and never working out before i have no idea where to start or what all these machines do or even which ones to work on.

I am currently on the bike for 45mins and treadmill for 30mins

I am not sure if this is what i need or where to start or what not.

I know i am over weight but the spots i really need work on are

Stomach
Thighs
Abs
Arms

Could anyone possibly direct me as to which machines to use?

I would hire a PT but i am a student and broke at the moment, so any help or direction would be great, thanks so much,

The gym doesn't have trainers on the floor available to answer questions?

Look for The New Rules of Lifting, by Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove - you should be able to at least look over the book at your local Barnes and Noble.

yes that cardio is good, you will need to continue doing this to help with your weight loss. Also try to set up a full body workout 3X a week and read up on the stickies about nutrition and stuff. Figure out the amount of calories you need to lose weight

well for 260 pounds i'm pretty sure at what rate hes doing cardio with a good diet he will begin to lose weight

your right i'm just gonna take a reasonable guess that MOST of a lot of his 260 pounds is fat seeing that he told us he's over weight and doesnt seem like he knows much about excercise going by his first post

Thats a fairly vague statement. Basically your saying so long as he is "expending" enough calories while on a good "diet", he will loose weight?

Well duh...
Besides like the average American. We must assume he does not know what a proper diet is. What the macro ratio is,timing and so on.

he said hes on the bike for 45 minutes and tredmill for 30 it sounded liek enough to me

Well of course you must take into consideration the intensity being done. For all we know he could be going at a snails pace or completely exerting himself to maximum potential for such a long time. In both cases this is not optimum.

Again we don't know if that cardio is good. Well again, his lifestyle might prohibit the use of a FBW. In this case a split might be more suited to his goal. We have to remember to consider what time a person has available to them in order to give proper advise.

Figure out the amount of calories you need to lose weight
Remember he may or may not know where to start or even how to figure his daily needs. Maybe he might only take into consideration his BMR without correctly adding in his lifestyle and exercise to that or possibly any medical conditions that can affect metabolism such as hyperthyroidism. In which case its impossible to create a proper deficient without proper knowledge on how..

and read up on the stickies about nutrition and stuff.
Now didn't you just criticize Sara for suggesting the "Stickys" to people? Yet here you are doing the same...

is it just me or does this place lack some support??

i think as a new member instead of being judged or told what he's doing wrong you guys would be a bit more ummm... understanding to the fact that some of us are "new" to the whole working out/weightloss thing.

I'm also speaking for myself here...

I am sorry i was not more detail about my question.

I am 260, I am told i have a large build. All my fat is in my stomach, thighs and chest. My arms and legs are large buy are very very solid. ( if that means anything )

I eat very very very bad. Fast food, Pizza, deep friend foods. Basically all junk.

I joined a club to loose weight not really to get toned or anything of that nature, just to bring my weight down and gets my bones moving. I haven't done ANY excersize or hard activity's for about a year. I walk a flight of stairs and i break out in a sweat.

I am working out 5 days a week for about 2 hours each day. Now i cant workout AND go on a diet, honestly i just cant see myself doing both. I have cut down on junk food, i only eat 3 times a day now ( as apposed to 5-6 ) Now i know the 3 meals i eat now are not HEALTHY but they are way better then what i use to eat. Example.

Before i use to eat about 5 times a day. Burgers, hotdogs, Pizza, Cornbeef and Hash, Drink soda all day, take it down with a candy bar, and a late night snak would be a bowl of cereal and then i would go straight to sleep. Now i know that is horrible.

Now, i eat only 3 times a day, maybe 2? i drink only water, maybe on the weekend i will have a soda. For breakfast i will do pancakes and sausage. Lunch i will do a sandwhich and dinner would be some sort of meat with maybe pasta with sauce. now i know that isnt all that healthy but comparing to what i use to eat, i think that is a great step

I know nothing about excersize, but the way i am thinking is that i want to stick with cardio until i get the weight down? and then i want to go with the free weights and those machines to tone my muscles, am i correct? If not please let me know.

TM2500 - In a way, you're right. This site isn't really about moral support. It's more about the learning process of doing things the right way. Sometimes, it comes off as harsh, but is rarely meant to be.

I understand what you mean, and people do need some encouragement and support. Personally, though, I find it more motivating to be in the company of those who are dedicated and educated then to be coddled (for lack of a better word) by those are struggling together.

There are many sites that seem to be centered more around making each other feel better than they are about teaching each other what to do, sort of the blind leading the blind - this is not one of those sites.;)

I hope I explained the overall "feel" of this site well, and I hope you understand what we are trying to achieve here and decide to stick around. :)

Fagan -

About your nutrition - you definitely need to improve. Eating 2-3 times a day is not optimal, instead aim for 4-5 small meals a day --- of decent food.

I am not one to expect anyone to go from pizza and burgers to baked chicken and veggies overnight. It can all be very overwhelming and lead to discouragement and failure. Instead, choose 3 things that you know you can handle changing this week and do them. Start off with smaller changes, then progress each week to more difficult ones. After a while, it will all seem like second nature, and it doesn't actually hurt that bad to get there. ;)

For the first week, you could try something like...

*Replace all but 2 12oz sodas a day with water (note I said 12oz-not two 3000 oz fast food cups full) --- This will allow you to cut down, w/out going nuts and getting all the caffeine headaches. After a few weeks, you would want to cut that down to 1, then 0 - trust me, you can do that. ---you can also drink some tea sweetened with Splenda with your food - that will give you some of the caffeine your body is used to, and a bit of taste---

You mentioned being a broke student. Ok, think of your average cost of a meal, then multiply that by how many times a day you eat out, by 30 days - and see how much you are spending on fast food. It's probably close to a car payment each month. ---- That alone can be good motivation to cut down the junk food, it's much more expensive. Some whole wheat bread, and healthy sandwich fixin's will go much farther for the money than a burger and fries.

Don't try to do it all at once. That has been shown to fail over and over in most people. Think of your habits, and think of what you feel you can manage (like cutting out most of the soda and replacing it with water and tea). Try to find 3 each week. As they start to add up, one day you will turn around and realize that you eat healthy, but barely noticed getting there. Trust me. ;)

Let me ask you a personal question: What is a diet to you? In other words, what does the word diet means?

To most people, it means eating less to nothing. This is a viewpoint made by society for people who don't know what diet means. Diet means lifestyle (i.e. lifestyle habits with your food). You could consider your eating habits of fried food as a diet (i.e. bad lifestyle habit).

Saying that you can only do exercise, and not diet doesn't make sense to me. Not bashing you, but it sounds like you're confused as to what a diet means.

If you have time in the day to eat 5 burgers, then you have time to eat 5 good things else where. Eating something like pasta is good, but it's mostly carbs, and you need protein from things like chicken, or eggs.

To put it simply, always eat "natural" food (or organic and the likes), not processed junk. For breakfast, eat something like eggs, or oatmeal. For lunch, try something like chicken, or something (eating pasta is good pre-workout meal, but I don't recommend it for you since you're not a body builder, and eating pasta will probably make it worst for your goal). For dinner, eat chicken, steak, or something with protein in it. Eat a lot of veggies, and be sure to eat 3 meals between breakfast, lunch, and dinner (something like veggie, or something like that).

If you do the above, you'll see weight loss... no matter what anyone tells you. Also, be sure to drink water, and nothing else. Don't be fooled into thinking something like Gatorade is good during workouts... it's only good if you are a high-performance athlete who is in serious risk of dehydration, which isn't what you're trying to do. Remember, water, water, and more water. Also, did I mention drink water?

Keep a journal of everything you eat and do. It'll help you pinpoint problem areas and it's a good thing to have when you go see a doctor/trainer about any problems you have.

Good luck, and come back with your progress!

Dallen, you forgot to mention that he should drink water. :11doh:
