Question about swimming

I actually find running to be boring and i really enjoy swimming so i wanna entirely substitute running with swimming because right now i do a little of both but i was wondering does the size of the pool matter for swimming laps or is it more the amount of time you swim for because im at my aunts house for the summer and she has a decent size in ground pool it isnt olympic size or anythin not even as big as public pools but its decent
 
It would be ok but you wont get as much out of your training from a 25 metre pool. The pool at my parents house is just on 10 m long and I can only just swim some very average laps in it. It might be different for you but I was a competitive lifeguard and swimmer for ages so it doesnt seem quite right to me.
 
In order to get the best full body work out, what you should look @ is the depth of the pool more than its length. The deeper the pool, the harder it is to swim in it, providing an overall better workout.

you are right! if you can not stand up in the water it is harder to swim in. I totally understand that.

What about those "endless" pool things that you can attach to your pool? It looks pretty cool and you can swim all day long as fast or as hard as you want.


As far as deeper the water is, the harder it is to swim... I have no idea what the heck that is. I think he's referring to scuba diving or something.... because the deeper the water is, the harder it is to reach the bottom... right? I never noticed and difficulties in swimming between depths of water... but maybe I haven't noticed... but then again I usually go to the beach.

I don't have any scientific evidence on hand to prove my statement, although prior to my massive weight gain I was a competitive swimmer.

In talking to other swimmers, trainers, etc... The general concensus was that the deeper the pool, the more powerful the opposing current is acting on you while you swim.

This is why olympic swimmers swim in very shallow water for competition, in order to reduce the tidal drag effect on them.

I could be wrong, but from experience it's much easier to swim 25 minutes straight in shallow water as opposed to deep water pools.
 
if i had a 25m pool in my backyard, i'd probably look like brad pitt in troy by now :D but who am i kidding? i eat like a slob...

but yeah, swimming is a great workout. if the water's too cold, muscles may cramp up and/or make you tire quite easily; and a run or the gym would be a better option.
