Dumbfounded on weights

I just started lifting and the first two things I realized are "This is hard" and "I have no idea what I'm doing". I've only been doing curls and bench presses since I don't know anything else.

Let me first say I'm just trying to get some lean muscle, I don't want to get ripped by any means. The problem is I don't want to do the same thing every day since that's generally not a good thing. What are some good free weight excercises I can do to change it up from day to day?

what Derwyddon said there is so much info on here you'll be giving advice yourself shortly. seriously good luck and welcome to the forum.

Many people here on the forum go with The New Rules of Lifting by Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove. It has everything you'd need, including programs geared toward general goals, like hypertrophy, weight loss, etc.

Ok where can I find that? I'm assuming it's a book right?

Yep, its a book, available at amazon.com, barnes and noble...pretty much any sort of book store or library should have a copy or be able to order one for you.

another option is ExRx (Exercise Prescription) on the Net which is an online resource of exercise instruction. plus we have stickies at the top of this forum to help you get started.

For now, don't workout more than 3 times per week, and try to work the whole body in each session. you don't need to do a whole lot right now, as any weight lifting is 'new' and will cause the body to try to adapt to the stress by increasing muscle mass, and strength.

more importantly your diet needs to be adequate, or you won't have the resources to build more muscle.

That right there is gonna be the hard part for me I think. I eat a lot. I don't eat much junk food but I eat large amounts of everything else. Is a certain diet necessary? I always assumed as long as you eat well you can at least put on a little muscle but the more I hang aroud here the more it looks like I can't gain an ounce of muscle unless I'm on a stricter diet than an overwheight hypo-glycemic diabetic.

In order to gain muscle you need to eat MORE than your maintenance level of calories.

If you feel you are eating alot now and do not put on weight then you need to be eating even more to build muscle.

Eating more is definitely not a problem for me. What I meant was that it seems like everyone is on these crazy ass diets where every iota of nutrients, vitamins, and all that jazz i marked down to number.

Is it possble to gain muscle without keeping track of everything I take in like some kind of Dr. Frankenstein of nutritional math?

Sure.

For some it may be more difficult if they don't track what they eat.

I am not on a strict diet, but I try to eat 5-8 meals a day and everything I eat is within a certain criteria.

I don't write down every single thing I eat.
