In intro to kinesiology class last tuesday (community college) we did push up test, crunches test (fingers need to cross the 2nd tape), and flexibility test. (this test is going to be used soon in K-12 and the children need to pass it. its called the fitness test). On the other hand, I did everything well except for the crunches test. I cannot get my back off the ground without my feet coming off the ground, so I got a score of 0. I don't know why my core wouldn't let me do it because everyone else got at least 1 and I exercise all the time. At the end, the teacher used me as an example of why we shouldn't hold our feet during the tests and such because I scored 0. First, the example was the teacher holding my feet and me doing regular sit ups, and then showing everyone what happens when he lets go of my feet (my back stops coming off the ground). I thought I had a strong core until now. I asked the teacher what core exercises I can do and he just said crunches..and I defiantly know that is not the right answer. I used to do crunches all the time before I found out their not the best exercises for athletes and stuff (for strength and explosiveness).
What are some athletic core exercises I can do to be able to get my back off the ground without having to force myself up with my legs coming off the ground? Other than medicine ball exercises and sit ups, crunches, bicycles, leg lowers, and the exercises that are not athletic related. I play sports, so I need explosive exercises and exercises that work the whole core at once and not just the upper abdominals or just the lower abdominals. My back is a lot stronger than the front of my body. By the way, in the push up test - I as a female was able to do 21 push ups with correct form until I got tired, so the back side of my body is stronger than my front. I play softball, so having core power, strength, and explosiveness is a must.
