Workout routine confusion

So what is the best way to gain size? Ive done all sorts of searches and have only grown more confused by different guys promoting different routines on websites. For size, Should i be doing 5x5, 4x8, 3x10, pyramid up, pyramid down?

Tonight i tried to Pyramid down for the first time and it shredded me. Seems much better than pyramiding up. I havent tried the 5x5 routine. I also read that doing 3 sets of the same amount of reps isnt best for size such as 3x10 or 4x8?
 
5x5 is more for strength than size. 6-12 reps is the hypertrophy range..many stick to 8-12 reps.

but to get big, you gotta eat. you could get big on 5x5 if you eat right, but if you don't eat right, no amount of 3x10 is gonna give you decent results.
 
Thanks for the info. I'd love to be able to do squats but unfortunately the gym at my apartment complex only has machines and dumbells. Ive made some gains so far using both, but i cant do squats. The best i can do is put a dumbell in each hand and squat with those.
 
Thanks guys. I'll give the split squats a shot also. Until i can join an actual gym i have to make do with what i have. Thanks for all the advice!
