I feel embarrassed to go to the gym

Classes will start at 10am for me next semester, and I plan to wake up at 8am and head to the school gym.

The thing is I find it intimidating to go because I'm so skinny. I know everyone has to start somewhere... but it's sad when I'm the skinny and tall guy curling a 15/20lb dumbbell in the beginning in a room filled with bigger, stronger guys.

Is there anyway to overcome this?

Should I get an adjustable dumbbell and weightlift at home until I am a bit stronger?
Membership for the gym is only $10/semester so there's no reason not to get one!

just do it man...like you said yourself everyones gotta start somewhere..all those big guys in the gym started somewhere too..but i definitely wouldnt put it off bc youre intimidated..the longer you put it off the longer itll take to reach your goals! and if it makes you feel better MOST of the time people in gyms are pretty helpful and they understand everyone has to start somewhere too

One thing that will help will be to get a better program.

Buy either "Scrawny to Brawny" or "New Rules of Lifting" and be golden.

I would say to buy both New Rules and Scrawny to Brawny. Both are excellent for your needs. Also, don't be afraid to go in, honestly - everybody knows that people start somewhere and generally everybody at the gym is cool about whatever you are doing.

Ok I'll give it a try.

My plan is:

Workout TuThSat
wake up at 8am and eat some snack,
go to gym at 9am and workout for 45mins
head to 10am class, and eat giant lunch at 11am

how does that sound?

Sounds like something to start on - If you're starting tomorrow, pick up those 2 books on the way home - believe me, you won't regret spending a few bucks on a solid plan for the rest of your life really. Read them over and you'll know how to get off to a great start from there - feel free to ask any questions or comments here bro :)

This is the same issue my older brother has (except he is obese), and he hasn't hit the gym yet after monthes of desiding to go or not, and guess what he hasn't lost a pound....

Don't worry about the other guys at the gym, no one cares if you can bench only 100 or your real skinny or fat. Everyone has there own goals to try to achieve.

Ya dont do dumbell curls. Those books mentioned will probably set you back $30, not a large amount for the knowledge you'll gain. Most of the guys in the college gym I go to just do bicep curls and bench, why because they dont know what they are doing.

You don't even have to buy the books, I just checked The New Rules of Lifting out from the library here, can keep it up to 3 months if I want. I'm really looking forward to reading it, after seeing many, many people mention how excellent it is...

well, if it makes you feel better, i curl 25 LBs with 2 hands. about to increase to 30 Lb. Yeah i am skinny and little but i always think of the outcome and it makes me wanna go to the gym even more. just wait and see, 1 or 2 months into training you should feel and notice some results. Just remember to keep your goals in mind and nobody is looking at you because they probably went through the same feelings your going through right now.

It's fun working out when you're just starting because that's when you see the most rapid changes.

only one way to get big and thats to get in the gym and start lifting! it's an awesome feeling when you havent seen someone in a while and you've gotten bigger..."holy **** what happend to you?!"...

bottom line just get in there and do it!! and check back on this thread in 2 years so you can laugh at yourself.

Both you guys would probably see better progress from chin-ups, rows, pull-ups, etc.

Who gives a shyt what anyone else in the gym thinks about you.

You are there to improve yourself, not to gain respect from others by curling heavy weight.

yeah, listen to LV. When i started at the gym i was scrawny and weak, i never got any looks or anything, and now that im not that scrawny and weak anymore, i never look weird on guys who are weak.

There are people who do care, but that's not the issue. Those people have x number of reasons why they would care about being all alpha and ****. Look, the only thing that matters is you and the weight...but you won't understand that until you actually get in there and lift.

first of all, there's nothing wrong with curling 20lb dumbbells. you'll be mocked for trying to use 35lbs and throwing the weight around with your body instead of your arms. you won't be mocked for trying hard and using strict form.

naw, people think that other people care and get afraid to go work out out because of paranoia basically. But noone does, ok sure maybe some retarded loser does but so what?

The people that care are the ones that are worried about other people caring.
