Running on empty

Hey, what do you do when you're at the gym and about halfway through, you're suddenly starving? For me it hits right after the leg press. I know I could push myself a little bit further if I still had energy left, but I'm left completely drained... so what do you do? I've tried eating before working out, but that's even worse.

Before I started my diet, I tried fast food (plenty of calories to burn there), since then I've tried eating fruits, or lean meats, and even tried protein shakes from smoothie king... Inevitably though, I end up very hungry within an hour, and feeling weak within half an hour after that... now, once I start doing cardio for about 15 minutes, I get like a second wind, but I still leave feeling like I didn't get a very good workout.

What about you? What do you eat before and how long before to not get like that?

What about you? What do you eat before and how long before to not get like that?

Pre: I have a bowl of oats and either eggs (if I have time) or a protein shake in milk, sans dextrose.

During: I have a 1L bottle of water with 1.5 scps surge.

Post: A carb/pro drink of 35g maltodextrin/25g dextrose and 30g whey. Then two hours after I used to go with a fat and protein solid food matter feeding, but I think I'm going to look at a carb/pro feeding, preferably solid food, for the PWO meal.

I think I'm going to have to try eating a protein bar between lifting and cardio. I just about passed out today... and I ate a whey protein powder coated bananna just before and a pretty good breakfast earlier.

It's best to have yourself a sports drink if you're going to exercise 60-90 minutes. It's a good way to replenish energy and the electrolytes lost throughout your long exercise.

90 minutes would be a very quick workout from what I've been doing... 3-4 hours is what I've been doing... maybe that's why. Either way, I'll know tomorrow if eating something after weights will fix the problem.

You're working out way too much.

You need a pre-made.

I recommend "New Rules of Lifting." It'll take care of everything you'll ever need.

Is it a problem to work out too much? I mean, I'm way out of shape and I have a long way to go. As far as I'm concerned, the faster the better, even if it hurts. At least until I'm a lot leaner. When I go to bulk, I'll work out a lot less.

The longest workout I've done took two hours from walk-in to walk-out, and it was a fat loss regimen. That included dynamic mobility work, PWO drink and shower. Workout itself was probably 1 1/2 hours, maybe less.

Get the book, you'll see better gains.
