HIIT Question

Which HITT coombo would be less stressful on my back:
treadmill, outdoor running, stationery bike, stairs? Or is there something I am not thinking of?

Also question about stairs...would you just try to run up them as fast as possible for 20 sec or would you be hitting every second starir, not sure if I know how to do stairs with HITT?

with stairs, run up and walk down.

treadmill would be better on your back. if u have access to a gym then go for the x-trainer.

If you do use the bike, be carfull cos it will put a lot of stress on ur spine.

Why do you guys think Hiit has to involve some running or a machine

Why not do :

10 jumping burpees
10 squats
10 push ups
10 crunches.

walk 10 sec

repeat ten times

because many of us here are into weight training. doing bodyweight strength exercises such as squats and pushups would not aid our training in any way.
Also the idea of HITT is to get the heart pumping as fast as possible. If you are doing pushups and squats at a speed which would make ur heart race then you will be doing the exercise way too fast and with bad technique. so you'll prob hurt urself.

Plus, there is no way I could get my heart rate to 180 with 10 pushups. I may get to around 150bpm after 100 pushups but then my arms would be sore the next day.

You've obviously never done a set of plyo burpees then. Do them for a minute or two and tell me a treadmill gets your heart rate up as much. That 10 10 10 10 routine done fast will have your heart thumping

you could do a minute or 2 of each. The burpees get the haeart rate up and you get a natural slow down through the other steps then right back to burpees.

Yeah but you try doing it if you were squatting and dead lifting heavy the day before.

The exercises you have described all use lots of strength, and when you are in to weight training it is far better to run, swim, bike and use x-trainers or skip, etc...

Running works extremely well for getting the heart rate up... You'd be surprised at what 30 seconds straight line all out sprinting does to your heart rate heh. Especially the 6th time you do it. Although sprinting puts more stress on your entire body, so it isn't the best for people with bad knees... I run on grass, heard cement isnt a good surface to run on because it's bad for your joints. If you live by a school, just do it in the field in the back of the school... they all have one pretty much with plenty of room.

I have done burpee's before and it makes my quadriceps burn whenever I include jumping with it (when coming back up to go down again) I can't go more than like 30 seconds that way. If I just do burpee's without the jumping, then I can go for 4 minutes. burpee's is just a quad burning exercise and tires you out.

Thanks for posting that guy's explanation of HIIT, Tony! It was just what I needed, I have been reading around to find out more about HIIT, that really helped!

haha

For thread started, have you access to a swimming pool? HIIT training in a pool will remove all impact problems commonly associated with running.

Prinicple is the same, just blitz say one length freestyle flat out 100% effort, then cruise back up and repeat until dead ;)

Hold on just a second

HIIT is suppose to be a cardiovascular, aerobic workout. It shouldn't involve things that you normally do with weights like squats and pushups.
