Recommendation

While I can't recommend a good martial arts class in the state of washington, I can help you find a good school...

first we need to know your goals. Keep one thing in mind however, your goals for MA will probably change over the course of your training...

Do you wanna know how to fight?
Do you want to compete?
Do you want to grapple, strike, use weapons?

Once we determine that, then we need to see whats available in your area, style wise.

After we determine that, we can continue with some sure signs of a McDojo.

To be honest the best way to find out is to visit them all.

I really hate classes that make ppl run up and down and do push ups. In my opinion its a waste of money. You can get fit and strong in your own time. When I pay for a lesson I expect to learn something. However, if you dont exercise in ur own time then u may like it, But your not gonna learn as much.

The same applies to drills and repetitive practice. many MA schools (namely wing chun) will make you chain punch or drill for your whole lesson. This is really annoying when You have spent 2hours every night practising, then you do it in your lesson as well.

also, look for a range of students. Its good to be in a class of mixed ability, cos if your a noobie then you'll get extra help. Its also really good to train with ppl much much bigger and stronger than you are.

So... go have a look at all the classes and choose what class you like best. Make sure you have a good chat with the instructer. An Instructer will normally be very busy before and after a lesson, so ask for a number and a time to call so you can go into depth about what you wanna know. Ask about where he/she trained, what they are trained in, ask whats difrent to other schools, etc...

Go to your MA schools with your goal in mind, and don't let them trick you into wanting something else. They should allow you to try a class or two for free...or at the very least, they'll let you sit in a lesson and watch.

Are you looking for the style to learn? or you want to learn the real martial art? if you want to learn chinese kungfu the real things just ask them to do the 5 stands and you'll know are they good or not.

you see the picture that's our sifu doing the horse stands you see the knees and the foot must align a straight line and most importantly the feet can not pointing outward it have to be pointing straight. You can go check some old wudang video, i found some on youtube the stands is exactly like this. Don't go looking into Shaolin new stands all their feet is pointing outward (V-shape). Their chinese kungfu have gear toward new wushu already. if you go look in shaolin than have to check out the old video where the good old traditional chinese kungfu gung is still there.

Good luck on digging, if you want to know all the other stands you can e-mail me i have other picture for all the others proper stands. It's hard now to find someone kungfu is good even in Toronto.
