Cereal. Please help

I have heard that you should stay away from cereal but what aboutBerry Burst Cheerios. Thats good for your heart and it has alot of fiber, plus it says its a whole grain cereal. But then again so is Cocoa Puffs cereal.

check the label, there shouldnt be added 'junk' ingredients. some cereals can be good - things like muslei, wheatabix and oats are good in the morning with fruit. id be careful with cherios as its a big chain brand and they tend to have added products that arent good for you.

what are you currently having for brekkie?

i admit to sometimes thinking cereal is a vitamin pill, but there are other, healthier options.

like oatmeal.

not that i'd eat it, mind you................

what about fiber one i think thats awesome for u 1/2 cup has only 60 cal 14 g fiber no fat, it sounds good to me. and like kellogs all bran 5g fiber not alot sugar/fat its good too isnt it, why only oatmeal and maybe kashi??

If you like oatmeal, the best I have found for breakfast (that doesn't kill the taste buds) is the following:

This is what I eat. I do 4 packs per morning. -That makes for 16 grams of protein and a nice dose of fiber. 8 packs per box, around $2.50-$3.00 per box. Whole Foods or co-ops should carry it, and if not will order it for you.

I like it, but if you have a sweet tooth, the rasins and dates may not be enough for you.

However, some of my non-healthy minded friends sure like it. :)

There are better things than Berry Burst Cheerios. The second ingredient in that cereal is sugar :(

It has 24g of carbs per 1 cup and 11g of sugar.

I like and prefer Kashi Go Lean as my cereal of choice. I have a major sweet tooth at times. In those times I eat oatmeal with raisins. Other breakfast ideas: Wasa Crispbread with natty PB and banana slices, scrambled eggs and hemp bread, cottage cheese with lots of fruit!

A lot of commercialized name brands make products that "pretend" to be healthy, but are usually loaded with overly processed stuff and sugar. There are better alternatives, like real oatmeal, Kashi, and plenty of others (though not as sweet).

Oh, Lynn, you are soooo dedicated. :) Seriously, raisins satisfy your sweet tooth? Damn woman, live a little. ;)

Agreed.

Most people also ignore that sugar is a counterproductive thing if you are doing any workout or weight loss. It should be avoided like the plague.

Fructose, (not high fructose corn syrup or any other combination), being essentially nothing more than fruit juice -squeezed and crystalized is the only safe sweetening ingredient other than pure stevia (which is almost never used pure, and costs a fortune).

The grocery chain "Whole Foods" and natural foods co-ops are great places to find things only sweetened with fructose or having no sweetening agent at all. Believe it or not, there ARE plenty of great food options and you will find they are packed with MORE protien and vitamins than what you are used to. -Just get used to reading every ingredients label you run across. :)

Now I eat oatmeal for breakfast and still have whole box of cheerios left. Is it ok if i eat a handful for snacks sometimes?

yay leslie!! eat better feel better! id say give it away or throw it out, i personally dont keep any foods that may cause me to binge or snack on that arent healthy. fruit are much healthier snacks but maybe compromise and put some cherios in snack packs and then get rid of the rest.

in whole foods look for natures path cereal, they are good and the 'optimum power cereal' is so tasty. also great for kids as it comes in a normal box so they dont realise that its healthy cereal(also some kids ones available).

deschain i used to have a massive sweet tooth and could easily eat a whole choc slab , or pack of cookies/harribo on my own in a sitting. i cut all the junk out for a couple of weeks and now i get mouth ulcers from having to much sugar. i eat raisins when i want something sweet and plums and such, but when i had a choc bar the other day i had a seriously bad headache from the sugar in it and almost felt my sugar levels rise(i dont think people can phyicall y feel it can they?). it realy put into perspective how much sugar i was eating before hand!

undercover_laur, not sure if you can feel it rise or not but I know the feeling you're talking about. It's amazing when we eat clean for even a few days and then have something "not so healthy." Your body immediately realizes the difference.

splenda is a perfectly safe sweetening agent too, probably more safe than stevia.
(hint: stevia has shown an anti-fertility effect in rats.)

I live for oatmeal. any cold cereal is a cheat meal for me, unless its a bowl of multibran chex with some added fiber one.
old fashioned oats. the instant stuff just turns to paste, but old fashioned oats stay fluff'd up if you don't over cook them. I add a little splenda, and sometimes a tbsp of natty pb.
natty pb satisfies my sweet tooth anymore. its amazing how you can adapt to less sweetness and salt in things when you cut out refined sugar and all the sodium from processed foods.
