Stunting growth at 14?

Im 5'8 140 pounds and have been working out for a while now, im 14 also. Ive read that working out can stunt your growth at my age, but my question for you guys is if I work out nice and easy and not hurt myself at all am I still damaging growth plates? I mean if I were to damage one would I notice in any physical pain or is it something that happens slowly inside your body and not noticeable? Im not benching 200 pounds or anything that would overdue my workout and if I start getting sore or something I stop working out so I dont hurt myself.

Thanks

~John M

You should keep the reps high (12-20) and use good form and there is NO chance of stunting your growth. If anything you will stimulate your growth and good health!

Just do not try to do 1 rep max's or anything like that, that is how most teenagers injure themselves.

Nah, you won't stunt your growth. 12-20 reps will help build up your muscular endurance, but if you're wanting to add a little mass, 8-10 reps would be better.

its not stunting your growth, but yes, heavy loads may still damage your bones on the growth plates.

keep the reps higher, like 8-12, and don't worry about going balls to the wall. you're still growing, and most of your calories go to that, not adding lean muscle mass.
just keep up general physical activity and make your workouts full body routines, 2-3 times a week.
push ups and other body weight exercises are just fine.

Weightlifting does NOT damage growth plates!

13, 14, 15 year old kids aren't going to be lifting the amount of weight necessary to damage the plates. If damage does occur, it's more likely caused by over use, not weightlifting. Stick to 3 sets of 8-10 reps, and you'll be fine.

I just still believe that it's not a GREAT idea to start hitting the weights HARD at that age. The body grows like crazy at 14 anyways. If you are going to work out regularly, make sure you eat good though. That is always the best advice anyone can give you because if you are not eating right, then working out only tears up your body.

Wait until YOU feel you're ready. I waited until I was happy with my size before I started seriously working out. I'm just turning 16 soon, so for height I'm close to the tallest I'm going to be... 5'10-5'11.

Body building triggers growth, but in a different way, and growth takes a lot of calories. So make sure to eat A LOTTTT.

100% agreed.

Yeah I eat a lot of food, and not junk food either, peanut butter sandwiches on wheat bread, fat free organic milk, whey protein shakes to contribute to gaining muscle etc.. Im stretching every morning and evening to help with my growing but is it alright to be lifting like 12 rep maxes in 3 sets? by max i mean I cant go on after 12. I dont see how it can hurt anything I mean if weightlifting stunts growth then I suppose profesional basketball and football players never touched a weight when the were 14-15? Because if its true that it stunts your growth then every profesional football or basketball player would be short am I right?

Ive been doin weights since i was 14, maybe not as serious back then as now, but in 2 years i have grown a stupid amount, so i rekon the 'stunning growth' is a loda balls..:)
