Too much work, lack of sleep...

I'm a 35 year old guy who's aim is to tone up and lose weight thru cardio and weights. I try to be in bed by 11pm every nite and i wake up like latest 4.30am in order to reach the gym when it opens at 6am. I find that lately i've not had the energy to be up and going when my alarm rings. I know insufficient sleep affects how i train, etc but is there any supplements that i should be taking?

You can drink caffieen and take pills but they dont give you energy they just make you feel awake, which is dangerous.

You will feel better if you get up at that time every day and when you dont have to get up early, only get up 1hour later.

the reason your tired is cos your not used to it, cos you prob lay in late when you dont have to get up.

try changing your diet and dont drink alchol of fatty foods. try going to bed earlyer, or even training after work/school.

its hard work, but thats why no very many people are in shape. It really is hard work, you have to choose if its worth it.

I hope it is.

Make sure you have a clean diet and eat every few hours, drink loads of water. That helps me and I work 12.5hrs min plus travel time to and from work, I try to rarely miss a workout cause that helps with the energy as well. good luck your bod will adjust , fust make sure you give it the fuel it needs to keep going. :D

yeah, missing a workout is the worst think you can do if your low on energy.

Dont let your body get confused between low energy and low motivation, its easily done.

Recent studies show that lack of sleep really doesn't have a noticeable negative effect on the body, only the brain. In fact, sleeplessness can cause many of the same mental defeciencies as being intoxicated.

That bein said, you get used to not sleepin. I work 40 hours, go to college full time, and coach 30-35 hours a week. Plus I put in as much (if not more) time with my wife and kids as good husband/father. My youngest is 19 months old. I haven't slept more than 5 hours in 19 months. Usually, I'm up every hour on the hour. I typically average about 4 hours of sleep per night. It was rough at first, but hell after nearly 2 years, I'm pretty used to it. Even before my new addition, I never slept. Either insomnia, night terrors, sleepwalkin, you name it. But on the bright side, you'd be amazed at what you can accomplish with all them extra hours;)

Buck it - thats pretty impressive man. I work 3x12hour shifts a week, after that my only comitment is spending 90mins in the gym every day and I still cant find time to wash my car.

Hehe, if it weren't for 30 minute lunch breaks and a hand wash car wash a block from work, my car'd be damn dirty...

Question: How much TV do you watch? I read a recent study that said the average American watches 28-40 hours of TV per week. That's at least a part time job! I watch 4 hours per week in the offseason, 8 hours during football season. That frees up a lot of extra time:D

That's odd...I just found an article showing possible links for childhood obesity to lack of sleep - I suppose maybe lack of sleep doesn't effect you as much when you grow up? I have problems getting up early if I've gone to bed after 11 pm

I acctually watch quite a bit of tv, mainly films and tv series from dvd. But then I'm usually doing something productive at the same time. My lounge is a fair size and I skip and do other CV or mates are over. On a regular day I'll watch TV for about 4 hours,
30mins- breakfast
30mins- lunch
2hours- after a workout including eatting dinner
1hour- before bed

so thats 21hrs a week, but for most of that, if i wasnt watching tv I'd be doing the same thing just in silence.

About the sleep thing - I would be very surprised if anyone could prove that lack of sleep doesnt effect the body, especially a sports person. When your sleeping most of your bodys energy goes to healling, without that state of rest it would take longer for your muscles to heal
