football/soccer whteva u wanna call it

Well, I just think you guys are comparing apples to oranges, two different sports, two different types of athletes, two different types of skills, two different uniform requirements. Yet you are still comparing them?

Personally I dont' watch either sport, I don't understand Rugby and I don't like football. But my SO loves his football and watches it religiously...I don't put it down though or say the sports that do it for me are better or superior...that's been the premise of this thread...that's all I'm saying.

Maybe if you would have read more you would have seen Chris state that Rugby players are much larger on the average. And, with the data I presented.. although limited.. (don't want to waiste all day gathering stats).. its easily to see that they are somewhat similar in compison.

Jungleb, I've been reading, I know that on both sides you guys are comparing-you were just trying to prove him wrong, I get it...

But you guys are talking about two different things, you can compare all you want-in the end they're still two different things.

And personally, I think your changing the subject.. the debate was originally on who hit harder (which somehow spilled over to which is a tuffer sport, which I think both are equally tuff sports.).. at least that is really the only thing you can debate on. I think everyone here knows its too different sports. So, probably don't need your sideline 'state of the obvious'. You can debate on which bite is harder, a shark or a lions although they are two different animals.

Here's my breakdown..

1) Both are extremely tuff sports.
2) NFL hits harder and more frequent (because of protection)
3) Rugby is more violent (because of no protection and less protective rules)
4) Both have extremely big and fast atheletes.
5) And just for you moon, they are too different sports ;)

Actually the original post was football versus soccer. It evolved from there to everything from superiority to comparisons, and even a few 'alleged' anti-american slurrs...oh, well

By the way, thanks for putting #5 in there for me :p

When you use a club as an example, try not choosing the smallest professional side in Britain! ;)

Can see the point but I would like to see any American footballer stop Jonah Lomu with a shoulder charge like we've seen in the videos - thats not a tackle, and that does not hurt.

Getting picked up and driven into the ground by your head like a stake hurts.

Thank you jungleb for having some common sense, and reading my post correctly. But it is true, I am just more passionate for football, so it is instinct to back it up. I think the only way to solve this is to let the NFL and Rugy League (whatever it's called) switch sports for a while and see how it plays out. Since that will never happen, this debate will continue forever.

It will never end.
but of course I'm siding with Football (american) even if there isn't any real point in the argument.

Football = Soccer USF= American Football.
All I can say is this:

Both sports are allowed way too much freedom and have way to much money pumped into them. I'm not siding with anyone although I am from the UK. I like football to PLAY, but the world cup showed why football/ footballers are in general a disgrace and shouldn't be allowed the right to have more money than other people who work much harder, and in some cases fitter. Italy won the cup, now no offence, but wth? The whole thing seemed fixed. I mean Australia, a country with 20million population, who don't even play football would have most probably beaten Italy, but what happened? Oh yes, some Italian dived in the last minute. Disgusting. Then what about the oh gracious England team, every other advert had a mention to the football team, they were the talk. So rooney decides to kick someone, the press had a field day on blaming the victim. Yeah, Ronaldo winked, I would to. Just had the opposing teams best player sent of. (I can't believe I just wrote that xD) I have seen much of USF but I do know that it has a lot of dodgy work going on, same as football. But then footballers seem to fall over at a touch, not to mention their general fitness isn't good at all. I bet half of the people here in their prime were fitter than 50% of the world cup players.
Summary:
I have lost respect for football
American Football shouldn't be allowed the name 'football'. Sorry to be harsh, but it isn't football is it? ;) I actually prefer what I have seen of it.

Football is the most physically and mentally demanding sport in the world...O I'm talking about "American Football". If you've ever played then you know...

Ummm, mentally - no chance- you're doing repeated calls throughout that you've done thousands of times in training - thats not mentally tough.

Physically demanding it maybe, but mentally tough - no chance.

I wouldnt say its more physically demanding than a lot of sports either, simply because of the huge amount of time spent either on the side (as there is an offence/defence split where most sports both teams are on the field during the whole game) and the huge amount of stoppages between downs, etc.

Physically demanding has to be soccer - there is no doubt in my mind - 8 (at least) players will play full 90 mins out of the 11 that start the game. No other sport does that.

American Football

In American Football, calls are being called over and over also. They are called audibles.

You can't be serious?

Imagine if you can...

You're a running back in an american football game... You're gonna be the ball carrier on a counter trap play that has you faking to the 4 hole (for those who don't know, thats the hole on the right side of the offensive line between the guard and the tackle) and then reversing your direction and hitting the 1 hole (between the center and left guard). As you get the ball, you change direction and see that OMG! The middle linebacker blitzed through that hole!! Now you have a choice to make... Do you cover up and take the loss in the backfield? Do you reverse direction again and try to find another hole? do you put your head down and try to go through him? do you bounce it outside, do you keep it inside? Am I gonna get blindsided? Am i gonna fumble? Am I gonna get a concussion?

I got news for ya too... soccer players dont get into collisions 10 + times a game either. Sure they run more, but come on.

I know nothing about the intricate workings of soccer, so I can't comment, but I've played linebacker, I've played running back, I've played tight end, I've even played slot reciever..... I know what I'm talking about when it comes to football. If you think that its rhote memorization of a play, you're very mistaken.

american football vs. world football (soccer).. we have rugby and aussie rules.. aussie rules is only big down here so i cant comment lol

soccer is one of the most skillful, popular sports in the world.. i don't think any other football code can ovetake it

This thread contains the gayest arguments ever.

My sports better than your sport.

My dad could kick your dads ass.

Seriously, get a life guys, these arguments are lame.

If you've played american football you'll swear blind its the toughest sport. If you've had the dubious pleasure of playing prop forward in rugby you'll swear blind yours is the toughest sport.

As on aside, I've played Aussie Rules as part of rugby training. Whilst the guys aren't the biggest, you have to be hard to play it. Some of the dirtiest **** I've ever been involved in, ball kicking (as in balls!!) eye gouging, punching. Great fun. Only the Aussies could come up with this game. Most probably pissed up at the time.

We should all agree that footballers are over paid pussies though.

Footballers are overpaid pussies, but you wouldnt want to be on the wrong side of Roy Keane or Vinny Jones?

Aussie Rules is just dangerous :D we played that as part of football(!) training once and I think it left us without 4 of our first team after 15 minutes, so it was cancelled.

I'd like to point out that a huge amount of skill goes into ANY sport. You cannot just say that one sport is harder than the other, because it varies from different people.

Mmmmmmm yeah kinda. I guess you can compare some sports eg. Rugby union vs. Rugby league but there's some you can't compare in terms of skill eg. Soccer vs. Cricket.
