i know i NEED to start gettin my health in good order.. but i cant seem to find the motivation.. i know i should do it so i dont get diabetes or heart failure.. but that doesnt really do it for me.. i know i should excersice, i want to get fit and healthy i really do.. but i just find it so easy to slip back into bad habits.. or i just stop goin to the gym for ages,

i am emotionaly depressed alot of the time, low self esteem, and wanting that killer body.. but my motivation dies off to quickly,

and i guess not knowing what and when to eat wouldnt help either..

can anyone offer some suggestions about how to.. get motivated.. and turn that motivation into passion?

thankyou heaps in advance

lowie - hey there. I'm not sure I can help much, but I just know that seeing pictures of people with the body I want gives me motivation. I just recently changed my workout regimen and literally in one week I have noticed a difference. THAT has given me motivation. I know all about depression. I suffer from it too. But working out (for me, at least) helps to ease the symptoms.

You CAN do it. Keep posting here and we will encourage each other. I know that plenty of people here have much better suggestions than I do, but just know that we are in this together and if you ever want to talk, I'm here.

thanks

i plan to keep at it. i do want it really bad! i just get lost in the bordom of it sometimes.. i need to find a way to enjoy my time at the gym.. and a way to get out of bed lol.. i have not started yet. i am starting on tuesday.. i have a todo list allready written out for the day.. and i will make a new one everynight.. hopefully that will keep me on track. i plan to get down to 90kgs (250lbs) i know i can do it. i just need to find the passion to do it.

Hi there lowie-

I might possibly have been one of the laziest people ever to exist ha. Tired all the time, unmotivated...For the most part I cared but at the same time was lacking knowledge on what i needed to do. So i stumbled upon this board while looking for information for weight loss and really its changed my life. One of the members here has a signature that says "Iron is the best antidepressant I have ever found. There is no better way to fight weakness than with strength." and it couldn't be more true. Since eating right and working out I have felt ten times better both physically and mentally. Even my bad days when i am frustrated with things is still nothing compared to my bad days when i wasn't working out. So here is some ideas about motivation and then some information on how to achieve weight loss and get into shape.

-Set goals but simple ones. Don't overwhelm yourself with "i need to lose 100 pounds". Simply say to yourself "i want to run 0.5 miles without being winded and in pain". "I want to lose 10 pounds in 6 weeks" "I want to cut out all soda and fried foods from my diet" Simple things like that, easy things to do that can be achieved without backbreaking effort but still require you to try and do something good for yourself everyday.

-Don't choose a model for your goals, choose a person. What i mean by this is washboard abs, sculpted chins...so much goes into having it, years of hard work, genetics, bone structure, and body types. So find a person who is nearer your size but smaller and try to achieve that, then keep bumping down the person and size in 10-20 pound segments. That way you are always achieving a new area, with a new body, and you will feel better about your achievements.

-Rewards-Who says that you shouldn't get a reward for doing something good for yourself? Make a promise to yourself, a gift, that you get whenever you achieve a certain level of weight. Like for every 10 pounds you lose you get.... A meal of your choice, new clothes, movie/cd spree, day trip somewhere beautiful or fun. Anything you desire but something that maybe you wouldn't normally do for yourself because you are trying to tighten your budget or save. You give yourself a reason to say "hey you know what, I worked damn hard and i am going to buy that new box set". Then when you reach your ultimate goal well you get the big prize, or even have the ones you love go in on it with you. Tell them your plan and see if you can all go on a trip somewhere.

-Pride-Yeah to much of it can be a bad thing sure, however it can be a good motivator if used healthy and properly;) Tell people what you are trying to do, start a diary here even. Keep them updated of your results. Sometimes not wanting to disapoint others can get you up on a lazy day, or make you put down the bear claw. Wanting to be the person that faces the hardship and pushes through is beyond rewarding and something to be damn proud off.

Now here is some information. Losing weight is very simple as far as what to do, its the doing it that is hard. There is no trick to it, no special gimmick.
First here are some foods to try and get into your diet.

Proteins-
-Chicken breasts
-Turkey
-Whey Shakes
-Fish (tuna, mahi, flounder, salmon)
-Lean steak
-Egg whites
-96% lean ground round

Carbs- (low Glycemic index carbs)
-Whole grain bread
-Oatmeal (non-instant)
-whole grain pasta
-white/red potatoes (not russet)
-Beans
-Fruits
-Green Veggies
-Yams
-Lentils
-Pita Bread
-Rice (non-instant)
-Whole grain Breakfast Cereals

Fats/dairy-
-Peanut Butter (natural)
-Flax seed oil
-Almonds/nuts in general
-Sunflower seeds
-Avocados
-Cottage cheese
-2%/skim milk
-2%/non-fat Cheese

Now every meal you want to get one carb and one protein. Now carbs provide energy, some carbs provide more than others. If its 8 at night and you are going to be going to bed soon you don't really need alot of energy right? So at night time eat carbs with low energy like veggies where as starchy carbs (rice, pasta, bread) you want to eat earlier in the day. You want to eat 5-6 meals a day. You in no way should be hungry or starving. Eating is about fuel, about getting enough just not to much. I eat a ton and i am a small girl so trust me you are going to be suprised with how much you can eat when its heathy, and healthy doesn't have to mean tasteless. I have tons of great recipes if ever desire.

Now you didn't list your height or your normal day activity so if you could do that it would help up give you a decent calorie range for you to stay in to lose weight.

As far as working out you want to start off easy. Try 4 days a week of brisk walking for 40 mins. Don't like walking? Well how about riding a stationary bike and a low pace for 40 mins? Dont like that? Well try doing low paced laps in a pool for 40 mins. See just find something you like. At your weight you don't want to over do it, if you find 40 at a low pace is to much at first well go for 30 and work your way up. After a while and some weight loss your cardio plans can change but for now i think anything about a low pace would be to much on you.

You want to try to get in 2-3 days a week of full body strength training. Let us know what you have access to, no gym, hey no problem, but give us the goods to help you better figure out a workout.

So my advice...

Pick for this week just one of these things... cardio, weight training, diet. Give just one your whole hearted effort. Then next week choose one of the remaining and then week three you do all three. Then week four try and get your diet a little cleaner, week five maybe add another cardio day... so on. Take it simple. Hope this helps.

well my height is roughly 6 foot,
lately my daily activities are computer.. computer and sleeping..
i know the computer is a big problem.. but my excuse is that i go on the computer because i am bored, i guess i dont try and find things to do,
and being 17 and living with my parents i am sort of limited to what i can eat.
i cant afford to do all my own shopping yet.

i have a gym membership, but i rarely go, i plan to start goin everyday from tuesday, 10 mins on the bike, 20 mins treadmill, 10 mins bike, 20 mins air walker (Xtrainer).

even thought i am around 320 pounds, i am not hopelessly unfit, i can widthstand a hard workout, the only problem is i give in too easy.

i know i can do it, i just dont like the pain while doing it.

last year i lost around 40 pounds within a month, i felt great, but i fell back into bad habits, and it all came back.. and i gained even more weight.

maybe i lost it to fast, i just lost motivation once i hit somewhere i was slightly happy with.

And my whole family is overweight, they dont want a bar of excersise, they say they are to busy, or to tired after work. So being in that environment with lazy people, lazy attitudes and poor foods its very easy to slip back into old habits.

This is really the first time i have reached out to other people for help, i thought i should be able to do it on my own, but nothing is changing, and my family isn't educated or motivated with this. So i need your help and inspiration to turn my life around, i dont want to die at the age of 40,
i want to get out of this house and do things, i want to be able to look in the mirror and smile at what i have.

i just need the tools to be able to do it.

i really appreciate all the help i have got and will be getting in the future,
this really means alot to me.

Lowie,

Commitment is the name of the game. For guys like us we need to schedule everything; gym, meals, rest etc... Buy a day planner and live by it. If you're that big at 17 you don't want what's coming down the pike for you. Stop it now man.

I have a major eating disorder so I will tell you what I've done. Again this is just my experience, it may not be the right thing for you.

-I joined Overeaters Anonymous
-I wrote down all the foods that I was eating on a daily basis that I know were bad for me and cut them out completely.
-Bought this book
-Started eating small healthy meals that fit in the palm of my 2 hands every 3 to 4 hours
-Eat mainly whole foods
-Cut out all soda, only drink water
-Started eating breakfast (critical)
-Commited to a serious workout regiment with 2 trainers (if you can't afford a trainer you may want to find a friend to workout with)
-I kickbox and run mainly. You may want to do weight training to add some strength and muscle.
-8 hours of sleep

This is a link to my progress

You can do it, there's another thread on this forum about Saturday morning weigh ins, join in. You gotta put the food down and get serious or it won't happen. Losing weight is intense you have to be more intense!!! In the words of Apollo Creed in Rocky 3 'be more man then him'... Don't let food win.

meal plan

ok i have made a temporary meal plan,
tell me what you think about it

this weeks eating plan.

breakfast - 3 weet bix, 1 apple (258.5 calories)

snack - 2 rice cakes, 2 tps peanut butter, 1 apple (286.5 calories)

Lunch - 2 slices Rye Bread, 4 small mushrooms, 1 small tomato, lettuce, mayonaise (230 calories)

snack- 2 poached eggs, 2 slices rye bread (288 calories)

dinner- Not sure, depends on what mum cooks.. but around 250-300 cals

suggestions, comments welcome

Eating 5 small meals a day is perfect. Whatever mom cooks, make sure you take in at most 350 calories. Overeating close to your bedtime results in your body storing those extra calories as fat. This is because you're inactive during sleep and don't immediately need energy.

Here is a good diet plan if you don't always have time for 5 small meals a day.

And remember to keep on lifting those weights. Putting on 1 pound of muscle (can be done in 1 month) burns an extra 50 calories a day even when you're doing nothing. Add 10 pounds and you'll burn 500 calories. Great way to burn fat and look great.

Good luck!

Yeah there are alot of problems here but nothing that can't be fixed. For one this equals at most under 1400 calories a day. You need double that. You can ask others around here not just my opinion. with your stats at least 2500 but shoould shoot for 2800 calories a day. I eat more than 1400 a day and I am 5'5 130 and a girl. see what i am saying.

Now as far as the meals where is the protein? Remember one protein, one carb per meal. So add some chicken, eggs, whey, whatever to some of those meals with no protein and in general add more food:) you have to eat to lose fat.

ok so i need to eat more, its hard to think i have to eat more to loose weight,
so i will need to almost double what i wrote, that seems like way to much food.. but if thats what i have to do then so be it.

theleip is on point. The only way you could eat like that for any extended period of time would be to lower you activity to nearly zero. If you ate like that and trained hard you'd collapse. Eat more and train hard and the fat will go.

Hi Lowie:

First of all I can tell you from experience that this is no easy undertaking; but as a person who smoked 2.5 packs a day for years and quit cold-turkey, I can also tell you that you can do this if you commit to it.

First of all find support. Get a workout buddy so that you can motivate each other.

Having a killer body is great but having a healthy body should come first. so try setting small goals so that you don't get discouraged. You'd notice a big difference in just losing 10% of your body weight for starters. Try South Beach or just get rid of the fried and white stuff in your diet. (Sugar, white flour mostly.) I bet that at your age if you just walked 1 hour and cut out the empty carbs the weight would fall off of you. Remember, you can only fail when you stop trying.

ok i just finished my first work out about an hour ago, im feeling great, and im going back again to the gym tonight to do full strength training,

this morning i did cardio

25mins bike med/high Intensity
15mins fast walk on treadmill,
about 7 mins running on treadmill, ( i was goin to do 10 mins but my breathing was gettin really heavy and my heart rate was at 190)

im not dieting, im making a lifestyle change, diets are designed to fail, you go on a diet, some day you are goin to come off that diet, i am making eating changes to improve my health, and to make me feel better, no more fatty, and sugary foods for me.

and personaly i dont think its right that you are charging $20 for diet advice, when all the people on this forum are more than happy to share there knowledge for free.

Looks great, good luck and be proud of yourself:)
